Last week was the end of my time @NPR. It was also the end of my time in journalism.
I have spent close to a decade making audio & fighting for the rights of my colleagues as an organizer @GimletUnion, contract action mem @NYTimesGuild & steward @WeMakeNPR.
I have been burning w/ a white hot rage my entire career bc of how companies mismanage, grind down, &, ultimately, burn out workers. Bc of the lack of care & respect management show towards the people making critical work.
That rage became corrosive as journo mgmt continued being out of touch w/ workers, unresponsive to deep concerns &, frankly, unimaginative when it comes to solutions. A leadership class that lays off workers while demanding ever more output & “trying to solve burn out” is a joke
A joke I no longer can be part of
Journos inform our world, hold power to account, expose corruption, raise voices
Mgmt has to start acting like that work is important instead of lining their pockets & maintaining a broken status quo. Is this work for share holders or the ppl?
How many VPs, CEOs, etc have we seen lose their jobs in these lay offs? I hope to see actual shake ups in the mgmt class. Failing up has to stop. Failure to make sustainable workplaces should be treated as position ending
They should be held to account. When we fight, we win
In conclusion, support your local journalism outlets. Support journo unions (big shout out to @InsiderUnion &everyone fighting an winning rn).
I want to thank every colleague I’ve ever worked w/ & fought alongside.
Solidarity forever. Here’s to what’s next.
