I’ve come straight from physical therapy so no coffee and I might be sillier than usual 😩
I’m planning to comment in favor of Charles and Cydney but also to ask the council use this time to instead focus on getting to a yes regarding the generous offer from King County.
First up: a woman bemoaning Charles “hitting” the business community with the homeless. I don’t know how to convey to people that no one would be happier than Charles to have the unhoused located in a safe and sanctioned place. Our city leaders have failed to provide that.
Darla the fascist: blames the tragic overdose death of her brother on the council. Says our entire community is at its greatest risk. And some more hate speech about the unhoused.
Grace S: here to speak in defense of Charles and Cydney, making it clear that they were acting with good intentions and as private individuals.
“Diversity is what makes our democracy work” 👏👏👏 hell yeah Grace.
Ben F: truly a lovely human, speaking with compassion and challenging us to work toward real solutions.
Stephen L: breaking down the RCW used to bring this hearing against Charles and showing why it isn’t applicable 👏👏👏
Chestine E: (professional ghoul) clarifying if we are supposed to be talking about Charles now or later. City attorney clarifies this section is not about the hearing.
Chestine saying the unhoused threatened her life so she refused to come to city hall. Yells at the audience for talking. Accuses Cydney of sowing confusion with her public statements.
Public comment interrupted by the crowd accusing a man of threatening to kill someone but the mayor called the crowd to order.
Patty J: complaining about the time it took for council to respond to her email.
She would like to speak to the manager
Joseph R: here to pray for peace which isn’t my jam but today I can get behind it I guess. It could be worse I guess? 🤷‍♀️
Jen G (my hero!!) : saying she is disgusted and infuriated by the move to censure Cydney and Charles 👏👏👏 reminding the audience that the unhoused are also members of our community who deserve to be safe.
@nancykick here to talk about the letter from King County!! THIS IS WHAT WE NEED. Asking the council to use their time to accept this offer instead.
🔥 from Nancy !! Show us your priorities Council!
David F: we have an opportunity tonight to decide who we are as a city- or we can discuss the letter. We have the opportunity to take this money and plan how we would like to use it. 👏👏👏
Armando R: reminding the council that all citizens of Burien (not just land or business owners) are their responsibility. Accuses some on council of failing to work toward solutions 👏👏👏
Benjamin S: says the council are blinded by their motions and bogged down by infighting instead of working together.
Toni B: says she doesn’t know Cydney or Charles but thinks that despite good intentions they have endangered the unhoused by relocating them to a median (which to be clear they did not do.)
There is a fundamental difference in explaining to difference between public and private land and physically relocating people.
Annie P: referencing Linda Akey’s piece in the burien news which alarmed her. She’s reading Ted Boe (our police chief’s) clarification to the false accusations made in that piece.
Quentin T: talking about his personal history with Burien and wants the city to help all of its residents even if we have to work extra hard. Calls the hearing a waste of city resources.
Daniel M: gonna quote him verbatim “Council, you are intelligent people. You know as well as anyone that CM Moore and Chair Schaefer did not create the affordable housing crisis that has led some of our neighbors with no options but to sleep outside. You have been briefed
multiple times on the state of federal law under Martin v. Boise and other precedent that has determined that homelessness cannot be criminalized, and that you cannot sweep people away from public property without an appropriate, local offer of housing.
I don't know why you would imagine that inventing a technicality to sweep people from one public plot after another would make the people living outside disappear.

Meanwhile, the County government has not only provided legal guidance and assistance, clarifying that the dog
park lease scheme did not absolve you of your responsibilities, but has also provided a generous offer of $1m through the Regional Homelessness Authority to fund security and materials for tiny house shelters, if only the city will approve a spot on public land.
Please stop wasting the community's time, the city's resources, and inviting media and legal embarrassment by testing the limits of how close you can get to criminalizing homelessness without violating Martin. Our neighbors need help. They need a safe place to sleep.
You have the power to do that--tonight. Drop the charges and get to work. This is what you're elected for.” -@apolarity ❤️❤️❤️
Julie M: sharing her experience being unhoused and how she worked to be kind to everyone. The mayor is gaveling her off.
Mary F: asking the council to remove Charles and Cydney.

Side bar: I really think people believe Charles is getting paid for his “job” as planning chair commissioner and it is literally a volunteer role.
This rant has really gone off the rails.
Chris w: here from the delusional org that’s been spreading misinformation about the camp, claiming that people who would have accepted services if not for Charles. Also claims to have moved 43 tents which is not true I was there and know that a significant # had moved by morning
Mayor gaveled him off too.
David E: saying Charles needs to be “fired” from his job in the Burien city government. I bet Charles would happily give this guy 10x his yearly salary from his position 😂
APPLAUDS the city for refusing the offer from the county 😂😂😂
How can the council help but listen to someone with such clear knowledge of how government works 🙃
Janine P: upset that an encampment has popped up in her residential neighborhood. She’s including a lot of hate about the unhoused as well.
Heather W: complete kook! Here with a Poster she’s drawn of a cute penguin with @vote_cydney ‘s stylish green glasses 👓but alas spewing hate with her time as usual 😔
Paula G: upset at Cydney and Charles but literally has no idea how laws work so
Phillip B: the city is clearly divided. I stand with Charles’s first amendment rights but what you do personally should affect you personally has professional consequences. Claims “the city has fallen into his black hole of empathy”
Says it’s not a housing or a services crisis but an addiction crisis.
Linda A, “lifelong democrat” claiming the sex crimes she made up in the media are real they just weren’t reported to the police. I agree these are underreported as crimes but it’s very u likely the victims reported to her and authorized her to write about it in the media if so
Lena P: reading a joint letter from other commissioners and committee members in support of Charles 👏👏👏
Daisy D. Saying she feels unsafe around the encampment and has been harassed multiple times. Blames Cydney and Charles again.
Margaret: wants to spiral on the distinction between private citizen and public servant. Claims they undermines what was decided by the city which is ironic because the city had decided nothing which was the actual problem.
Owner of the jewelry store and upset about the unhoused camping near his store.
Like I have sympathy for business owners but you cannot reasonably claim the threat faced by the businesses is the same as that faced by the unhoused. These are not equal.
Owner of grocery outlet frustrated by the tents in the area by his parking lot. Again: valid. But the unhoused will not disappear. You have to give them a place to exist safely.
Lindsey S: “a large housing provider” reminding the council that they were elected to represent all of the voices (by which she means the business owners) and annoyed that the unhoused are being moved around- like y’all where did you think they would go??
Also unabashedly using the phrase “greater good” a lot 😬
Kathy M: moved here from Minnesota “we wanted more diversity but I didn’t want to live in the hood” which is a pretty fucking racist thing to say with your whole damn chest Kathy
Ok now on to public hearing which has its own public comment section 🙃
Oh good Darla the Fascist again! Saying we “put that camp” next to her business in the heart of burien. Saying this has poisoned the whole west coast and that San Francisco is closing down in front of our eyes.
Alex A- candidate for city council and here to continue to repeat Kristine Moreland’s lies that Charles ruined the lives of young girls. Calls it a “fentanyl camp”. And again asks for a vulnerable adult protection order against Charles and calls him an “abuser”
Daniel M, outlining the series of events relating to the order of events around the letter. The mayor interrupts and asks him to stay on topic. He replies that this was the councils choice (through inaction) not Cydney and Charles.
Linda A, another candidate for city council- says she spoke with Charles and he claimed to authorize the move. And offering herself as a witness to the council.
Julie M: talking about an 82 year old woman who lives in her truck that Charles has helped and more people he’s helped to apply for housing and tax benefits. I can personally attest to this and she’s very brave for speaking up here ❤️
“It was two homeless people who called the fire department and saved this building” 👏👏👏 hell yes Julie
Chestine E saying basically what she said before I guess
Quentin T: speaking over the mayors attempts to interrupt him to speak again in favor of Charles.
Rocco D: our wonderful vice-chair of the planning commission here to speak to Charles’ service on the commission. And expressing disappointment that we are wasting time and resources on this👏👏👏
Mary F: here to share more of her True Crime Podcast theories about how suspicious it is that the homeless keep showing up and says this is all Dow Constantine’s agenda.
@Jfichamba : speaking about her years of volunteering alongside Charles. Says it shouldn’t be a surprise that he stepped up to work with people impacted by the sweep and says the council is wasting time by not working toward solutions 👏👏👏
Trevor G: founder of an actual hate group, “The Burien Voice” saying that Dow has found “soft spots” on our council.. ew this guy is grosser than I realized IRL
Jen G: getting shouted at by the crowd and interrupted by the Mayor as she asks the Mayor and the council to hold themselves to a higher standard. Calls out the Mayor for rolling her eyes at the unhoused woman speaking earlier.
Patty J: Charles has put out city at financial risk (she’s going on a rant about the liability as though the worst thing about a human being possibly dying is the lawsuit the city would face 🙃)
August H: member of the planning commission who says that Charles runs his meetings with respect for the people attending and the people on the commission. Damn it my phone deleted his quote about Charles using the gavel too much 😂
Y’all I really am alarmed by how many speakers do not seem to recognize the agency of the unhoused to make decisions for themselves. Charles and Cydney provided them choices and information: they made decisions as individuals
Benjamin S: praising the planning commission & Charles for keeping the community informed. Points out that having him off the commission isn’t going to stop him from helping the unhoused . “It would be more of a disincentive if you mandated him to wear a different hat” 😂
Lena P: speaking about her admiration for Charles as a commissioner and as a volunteer. Pointing out the accusations about him damaging the relationship with the county is more applicable to the city councils actions of late than to Charles’s
Praise @CMHugoGarcia for attempting to amend the agenda to use our time to discuss the letter but the city attorney says the special meeting agenda can’t be amended. Thank you for trying Hugo!!
The mayor prevented a hearing impaired man from speaking after the close of public comment but im hoping she genuinely did not realize he was reading the subtitles which were delayed.
Here are the detailed charges: burienwa.civicweb.net/document/85393… Image
Apparently putting the city in an “awkward situation” is a punishable offense now? I did not know this.
Charles asking for the time limit for his defense to be changed to 15 for main arguments and 5 for closing, which the council allows (instead of 10 and 10)
He’s making his case very well so far- sticking to the statutes and relying on his truly unmatched understanding of the rules 👏👏👏 Image
The crowd is jeering at him and the mayor is asking them to be quiet. He’s explaining his efforts were intended to help the unhoused comply with the law as they were being swept.
Asking the city manager as a witness. Says it’s unusual not to be presented with the questions in advance but does feel that Charles’s actions have interfered with your work.
Accuses Charles of monopolizing his time and the time of staff 🙃
“The council packet stated that people could sleep on sidewalks, which I don’t think is ideal” 😂😂😂 Charles’s testimony is
The mayor arbitrarily imposed a two question per CM in the middle of Hugo’s questions so that’s cool.
Stephanie Mora tries to imply he was fired from transform burien (he resigned voluntarily in protest of financial mismanagement- his letter is here: b-townblog.com/letter-transfo…)
Kevin Schilling is asking what the oath commissioners take- and is reading the council oath which is not given to commissioners. Charles says “I may not have taken it but I stand by that oath”
@CMSarahMoore asks how he knew the individuals he was speaking to. Charles is speaking to the years he has known many of the individuals as a person before he joined the commission.
Jimmy Matta asking how Charles handles disagreement, and Charles speaks with respect of the people who came here to call for his removal.
Stephanie Mora asking about his knowledge of Martin V Boise and he responds that he’s not a lawyer but somewhat familiar from recent discussions of the decision by council.
Jimmy Matta asks if Charles believes it’s ok to use drugs - Charles - I’ve advised them to comply with the law and that drug use would upset the neighbors. I don’t believe people should live in dog parks or the sidewalks but right now there isn’t a place for them to go
Kevin Schilling asking why Charles didn’t advise them to go to the county property or to long term detox
Did Kevin sign that council civility pledge ? Because he’s openly yelling at Charles now
Stephanie Mora is calling on Debra George and saying the Salvation Army offered everyone “services” which is not the same as shelter
Closing remarks:
Jimmy’s remarks: you can be an activist or a commissioner but not both. (I guess I should resign from the BAC because I am both.)
@CMSarahMoore ‘s closing remarks are 🔥🔥 but I don’t have battery to film them but it’s basically: we as a council did not take action on this issue so there was no action to undermine. 👏👏👏
Cydney Moore now reminding every bit of information that was shared was public information and every person in public service should do their best to share information with constituents . 👏👏👏
The mayor and deputy mayor working HARD to show how hard they’re ignoring Cydney when she talks. #civility Image
Cydney being heckled by the assholes in the crowd while she tries to speak. Image
Kevin Schilling and Stephanie Amira again repeating the lies that everyone was offered shelter.
Hugo “I hate to say it but I agree with Darla: we haven’t done our job as the council” 👏👏👏 THIS is what leadership looks like.
Wow this crowd is heckling Hugo for an emotional speech and I hope they get help for whatever is rotting inside them where their soul should be!
I don’t even know who we are as a community any more
Mora moves to remove him.
I wish I’d worn my Hugo shirt today :(
My battery might not last to the end of this. Kevin is saying there were violations of charges 2-6, 8 & 9.

Really devastated by Burien city council’s decision last night to remove Charles Schaefer as planning commission chair so I’ve decided to resign from the Burien Airport Committee.
I cannot in good conscience serve or advise elected leaders who would scapegoat the problem of where our unhoused are living onto one unpaid member of a volunteer planning commission who tried to advise them to the best of his ability about where the city legally allowed them.
It was a disgusting thing to watch. The crowd was once again so hateful that they heckled a council member for getting emotional while talking about a family member’s health (in the context of “this is a misuse of time and a lot of us have other things we need to be tending to-

It is shocking to me that 4 members of Burien city council voted against this offer of $1M and even tiny homes for our unhoused from King County. How do we even justify being our own jurisdiction when we actively refuse offers to meet the basic needs of our residents? ImageImageImage
If a Burien hadn’t incorporated the unhoused would have been able to access these resources. Anyway thank you @kcexec for trying. This was our city leaders failing to help those most in need when being presented with the resources to do so, and it’s embarrassing.
Kevin Schilling, Sofia Aragon, Jimmy Matta, and Stephanie Mora should get asked about this vote in every candidate forum in every race they ever enter for public office from here on.

It's endorsement season so I want to share some thoughts that have struck me as I've observed how this plays out specifically in regard to the #Burien city council race. (🧵this might be a long one...)
First off: No one owes you their endorsement just because they've endorsed you in the past. Incumbents ought to be held to a *higher* standard for endorsements, not a lower one. A first-time candidate can impress me with their values, intentions, aspirations;
an incumbent must demonstrate with their specific actions, votes, accomplishments, decisions, that they have in fact used the power bestowed upon them by the votes to further the agenda of the group they'd like to be endorsed by. (Yes, this is about Kevin Schilling)
