There is no clause in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 that proclaims that GoK may impose any taxes or rates as it wishes to. Article 210 allows parliament to impose, waive or vary in accordance with legsilation. #IEAKEBudget2023 3/N
And because parliament is constituted by elected representatives, citizens may forbid parliment through petitions, from imposing excessive or undesirable taxes. #IEAKEBudget2023 4/N
Citizens should realize that a tax represents a claim on your earned property, which the constitution protects too. Tax rates are therefore a critical issue to debate vigorously and without being shamed for being selfish or criminal. #IEAKEBudget2023 5/N
The true test for acceptable taxes is to pay modest rates for goods that we cannot buy in markets for ourselves. These are pure public goods and they are a handful. Needless to mention, houses and stadiums are not public goods. #IEAKEBudget2023 6/N
Avoid uncritical acceptance of the messaging that GoK knows best what we need and that our needs are secondary to what GoK prefers and for that reason we mustkeep our wallets open for whatver amount GoK would claim. #IEAKEBudget2023 7/7
