[1] #ICFUST Industry Panel Continued
Nardell: we need to think about where to make inroads. perhaps schools, but what about restaurant industry? where else?
Johansen; Easy. Malaria
[2] Johansen presented research yesterday that this is the most effective mosquito repellent ever studied)
Nardell mentions that it kills poinsettias
[3] audience Q: Scientists answer these questions by asking whether safe via study, but public messaging needs wider data (ie absentee rate drop). Need to collect that data, but it into a database and substantiate it, so the market can turn that data into literal cost-benefit
[4] Audience Q: this is an awareness issue. we need a trade association for timelines, data, market research, etc. start TODAY.
[5] Dan Spicver: the IUVA just had a meeting in GA, broke into three groups, led a session dedicated to education, training, certification, and outreach. this exact process started last week. we are starting with case study showcase
[6] re application of this technology. this group has respect, trust, much more weight than new or or individual OEMs. pop science, videos, scicomm, navigability. Want people to do Youtube videos...if there was only someone at ICFUST that could help 😀
[7] Audience Q: the immunnecompromised as a target population. Becuase they are so sensitive, a likely huge trackable number change. (focusing on chemo?)
[8]Ed Nardell my only concern there is that the sense is they want it home. I don't think it belongs there (my note: we think there are lots of nuanced use cases and for some will be game changing)
[9] audience Q: I treat immunocompomrised, air travel is terrible for them, this seems like a great place to start people pay premium price to be for a short time with demonstrated infectious vulnerability
also: dentists
[10]Q: A layered approach in necessary. for general awareness, does anyone have stickers saying "your air is protected by? that would be great easy messaging. have any manufactures seen the signals of ozone gene4rtion or VOC toxicity? we need to talk about the real world.
[11] Nardel: Yeah we do, do it at the jazz club(in Boston)
[12]
Paula Olsiewski Q: we need to promote polices for health indoor air. when we selected the venue for the clean air conference last year, we picked someplace with great ventilation and worked with experts to install UV so we could showcase it. no fear, lots of excitement
[13]
Nardell: the problem is the word UV.
Q: The NYT has an article of a Johns Hopkins program to drive down TB in tibetan boarding school. Sounds to me like a place that would be an ideal installation
[14] nardell: This is a good reminder that TB is the #1 killer globally when we don't have a pandemic.
Q from Architect : GUV is being put into building codes. That is how things actually move in the real world. We need to have conversation with architects
[15] Paul Jensen: We have an University of Maryland grant to work with certifying lighting maintenance body to add certification program for UV installation
[16] Peter Johansen; We have the highest density of UV to fix issue of clean rooms in pharmacetical. there is no indication that this incredibly high concentration creates any UV on the light side
[17] Audience member: Japan is doing a mass scale, and seeing no issues.

[2]written in direct response to the conference (and during the conference) reminder: COVID has caused enormous caseload and death and pre COVID lower respiratory infection was already #4 cause of worldwide death.
[3] This is a huge health challenge worldwide
three vectors for air and infection: communicable diseases( TB measles, flu), opportunistic pathogens (aspergillusm, NTMs, etc), airborne role in other infections (mrsa, c diff, norovirus)

[2] (First shout to Balvi for the support on this one! (

Going to address health literacy. The context is the extreme importance of getting the messaging right and letting this space make the change it can
[3] Examples of health messaging that went off track from a public health messaging perspective:
mask effectiveness: they work, they worked, that message was missed. Vaccinations work, but the term "break through" diminished (as opposed to "saving lives, decreasing illness, etc"

NIOSH in US is focused on occupational safety and health, seek knowledge and apply it to the workplace. Will move through the panel now.

[1] Goniophotometric intensity and spectral measurements in the UV for a Care222 Excimer lamp unit with and without a filter and diffuser unit
Rolf S. Bergman, Rolf Bergman Consulting
[2] We care about total photonic output for disinfection. Wanted to explore spectrum impacts off axis, and what happens with difuser.
Lamps: USHIO B1 with and with out filter, and also with added diffuser
[3] Data shows angular difference with and without filters in terms of 222nm output(as expected). Spectral data with off-axis shows reduction in output as well(expected) and the filter reduced light above 235nm which is good.

[2] Need better meters especially between fluence and irradiance. UV radiomerters - widely used, convenient
UVspectroradiometers - much more comprehensive
[3] Radiometers often calibrated for near radiation. Most commercial radiometers don't cover the range of Far UV-C. Also need to match spectral response to wavelength of interest or big errors. Knowledge of light source used in calibration is very important!
