An extreme heat event currently ripping through Mexico has been described as "hands down the worst in the country's history." Children have been killed, athletes at the country's national games hospitalised and wild birds have died en masse as temperatures approach 50C (122F) 🧵
The Mexico heat event is unprecedented in its scope and scale. Of note has been the extreme heat at high altitudes
Temperatures in Mexico will rise close to 50C next week
Meteorologist and weather historian Maximiliano Herrera says the heat event is "hands down" the worst in Mexico's history
At Mexico's national games, basketball players were hospitalised due to heat stroke and the women's softball final was called off when six players fainted due to heat stroke during the match

Wild birds that hunt over the ocean died of starvation as their prey swam to cooler water to escape the heat. The recently begun El Niño weather pattern which brings hotter weather to the tropics has been boosted by record high greenhouse gas emissions

This article says a couple and their child died as they fled their too hot home and tried to cool in their air conditioned car. Others have died with hundreds hospitalised. Mexico's official weather service says the heat will continue for months elpais.com/mexico/2023-06…
When this heat event ends, another is forecast to start in early July, with the country's meteorological agency saying extreme heat will persist until October hipertextual.com/2023/06/cuarta…
With greenhouse gas emissions rising out of control to new record highs, not one country in the world is on track to reduce emissions enough to meet the Paris agreement 1.5C target according to climate action tracker Image shows world map with ...
Due to the grip of the fossil fuel industry on the global political economy and the unwillingness of politicians to stand up to this industry, it is now expected that the 1.5C goal will be breached within years, bringing even more extreme and hellish heat

The current economic growth paradigm has not only failed to rein in emissions, it has pushed them to unreal highs. Current atmospheric CO2 is higher than any time in the last 3.6 million years and the rate of increase is higher than in *66 million years* earthsky.org/earth/carbon-d…
Studying the chemical properties of sediments laid down tens of millions of years ago, researchers have determined CO2 is currently being released 10x faster than in 66 million years. "We have entered a no-analogue state."

This week heat builds across the Iberian peninsula and there are some astonishing model runs coming in for just how hot it might get. Widespread 40-43C (104-109F) in Spain & Portugal, with 47C or 48C (118F) in both countries not out of the question. All-time heat records may fall Image shows a forecast map ...
At these temperatures wildfires become inevitable. We also know heat events like this correlate with a spike in hospital admissions, as the human body struggles to cool and moderate its temperature
The all-time record high temp in Portugal is 47.4C and 47.6C in Spain. Both were set in August. We are only at the beginning of summer

Peer-reviewed study shows even a mild covid infection can impair for months a human gene critical to fighting cancerous cells. Other viruses such as hepatitis B can do this, but none are airborne or in general circulation. Where are the mass media journalists? 🧵
The study in the peer-reviewed Journal of Infection Control shows that gene p53, which stops cells with mutated or damaged DNA from dividing and therefore halts the progression of cancerous cells, is impaired for up to 6 months even in mild covid cases
The researchers showed mild/moderate patients showed statistically significant impairment of the p53 gene when compared to healthy controls at 16 weeks and only a reactivation towards normal values at 24 weeks, or 6 months

The manipulation of public opinion on covid has been intense & successful. Most ppl I know believe 3-6 of these. They're all lies 🧵

1. Lockdowns weakened immune systems
2. Like a cold/flu
3. Kids don't spread it
4. It's seasonal
5. Masks don't work
6. No one dies of covid now
1. "Lockdowns weakened immune systems." Lack of exposure to viruses cannot weaken an immune system because that's not how an immune system works

2. "Its like a cold/flu." Covid is a systemic disease. The virus attacks your blood vessels and can therefore invade every organ in your body. It has so many way of damaging your body it could hardly be less like a common cold coronavirus

The anti-lockdown push was always a capitalist agenda point. On its website, the World Economic Forum (home of the Davos billionaires), says drug shortages are a result of increased demand because lockdowns weakened our immune systems. This is not science. This is a lie 🧵 Image shows screengrab of a...

Keep pushing compounding risk into a system - whether greenhouse gas emissions, destroying the invertebrate foundation of global ecosystems or infecting hundreds of millions with a rapidly mutating virus day after day - and don't be surprised by anything that comes next
There's a tendency for people to look at obviously bad things and say "but this is unsustainable! it will have to change." But the managers of capital do not and cannot think in terms of an approaching point of unsustainability. It's not allowable
If it was, you'd have to make plans for when you'll stop mining, stop making plastics, stop pulling oil out of the ground, stop chopping down forests, stop viral transmission. You'd have to plan to deliberately dial back the machine. Unsustainability is capitalism's feedstock

Breaking: New study shows covid in omicron form can kill even young, vaccinated and boosted individuals with no pre/existing conditions by invading and persisting in organs across the body 🧵
The study out of Argentina consisted of 21 people who had a recent covid infection at the time of their death between January and August 2022, with autopsies conducted to search for the presence of viral persistence in organs
Viable virus was found in all the tissues analysed in various locations, including in the lung, the heart the liver, the kidney and the small intestine
