Hi my name is Domo. I’m from south Texas and a black Texan. My dad was born in 1936 and his grandma was a baby when black enslaved folk were freed in Texas on #Juneteeth ima tell y’all how we celebrate Independence Day in my family.
So. I’m from San Antonio, my daddy was from Gonzales county Texas (about an hour between San Antonio and Houston) every year during Juneteeth we would do what’s called a watermelon thump.
Watermelon is now a really twisted stereotype for black people but that actually came from an early disinformation campaign because post enslavement black folk were able to grow and sell them to make a living. White people didn’t like that so… stuff like this started to pop up.
It’s called a thump because when watermelons are ready to eat you can tell which ones are sweet by thumping them and listening for a hollow sound. (Also there are male and female watermelons, the sweet ones are the round ones with yellow bottoms too)
So every year when I was a kid my dad would take me down to his hometown and we would sit and pick out watermelons then BBQ. I’d get to listen to all my aunts and older cousins stories of growing up under Jim Crow. Partially why I am who I am today.
So today eat you some watermelon, sit at the feet of the elders, enjoy time with your peoples, dance, listen to music, and enjoy the freedom that people survived for you to have. Happy Independence Day daddy.

I should’ve shown up to those elementary school basketball try outs. I wanted to watch power rangers like a loser and now I’m a marketer instead of a franchise player. Smh.
Maybe it ain’t too late. I’m tall enough to be a combo guard. How hard can dribbling be?
Every time a Democrat loses a presidential election to a Republican. We see the effects of the shit they warned us about 20 years later and it turns out they were always right about it all the time.
Carter Told us that Reagan was going to deregulate banks and it would cause a crash to the economy. Reagan deregulated banks in the early to mid 80s. What happened in the 2000s?
Michael Dukakis told us that Bush Sr was going to fuck up in the Middle East & what happened?
My uncles and grandpa never got their GI bill. That’s all I’ve been able to think about the last few days with all this talk about Memorial Day, WW2, and Normandy. Black veterans went across that water to free those white people and came back to get lynched by the Klan.
I actually come from a military family. I’m the oldest male of my grandparents grandchildren to not join “the service” as we call it. The reason I didn’t is because my mother who is the daughter, wife, aunt of veterans forbad it. Because her dad never got his GI bill.
My papa went to Korea. Saw some shit he would never speak about and had to deal with racism from his “brothers in arms” then came back here and they told him if he wore his uniform they would lynch him in it because he didn’t deserve to wear the flag.
