Since we’re all talking about the Titanic today, the reason finding the Titanic was such a Huge Deal is because it proved the women who survived the disaster weren’t hallucinating.
Survivors of the Titanic were, unlike most maritime disasters, primarily women & children. They were also able to see most of the disaster up until the electricity gave out. This provided a rare glimpse of how such disasters occur.
The women on those lifeboats were adamant the Titanic sunk like this: the stern flew upwards, then a loud cracking noise filled the air, the stern came back down because the ship had split in two, then the stern went back up & finally sank.
The critical point is this: the Titanic absolutely split in half before sinking, & the survivors absolutely saw this happen.
But those running the inquiries back home were men. And a ship like this hasn’t sunk before, so they assumed the disaster had occurred as all other similar disasters did: with a whole ship sinking into the waves.
The women survivors were utterly dismissed in their testimony. The noise they heard was deemed to be something else entirely, & they were told they imagined those last moments due to the stress of the situation.
In the face of this opposition, not many survivors held onto their initial view of how the ship sank. Some were convinced otherwise but most likely most just decided to be quiet. Why argue anyhow? Their loved ones were dead regardless.
Finding the Titanic wreckage, then, was critical because it was the first time survivor testimony was proven correct. Hundreds of feet separated the two parts of the ship. There was no way it could have sunk in one piece.
There absolutely is a purpose to uncovering shipwrecks. Even where survivors to a disaster exist, they’re busy surviving. Shipwrecks tell a greater part of the story, & they are physical evidence that cannot be dismissed.
All of this to say, I’m not against trying to find the ship in the first place, even if it is a recent mass gravesite. It honors both the dead & the living to finally be able to tell the story as it occurred. But once science is satisfied? I dunno. Maybe leave it be.
The Titanic is an absolutely fascinating perfect storm of a disaster that deserves further inquiry by folks, btw, just a total system collapse in every possible way.
(And no I don’t have sources, my source is reading everything about the Titanic since I was like 12 then visiting the museum a few years back)
Oh cool there’s some folks here who talk about seeing it break, that’s rad encyclopedia-titanica.org/the-titanic-br…
Muting this because I’m exhausted sorry

When I say the Titanic is a perfect storm, I mean quite literally every possible thing that could have gone wrong did. Like to the point where it almost feels fated to sink.
Before the sinking, the White Star company had reason to believe their ship actually had a better chance of managing a disaster than other ships. They didn’t think the ship was unsinkable, but they had planned quite a few safety features.
At the time, lifeboats weren’t calculated based on the total number of people on the ship, but White Star placed more lifeboats than legally required onto the Titanic. The ingenious bulkhead system meant they could hold on after a major collision as well.

When I turned 12, my mother informed me leg hair was disgusting. She handed me a razor & lotion & told me to fix it. I had cuts everywhere. It was so itchy all week. She praised herself because she wasn’t allowed to shave until she was 16 so look how progressive she was.
Good friend of mine was dragged to get her eyebrows waxed at 14. I was with her for moral support, she was literally sobbing, & her mother kept telling her to suck it up because she was too old to look like a boy anymore.
It doesn’t surprise me TERFs are forcing their daughters, or those they deem daughters, to do hair removal against their wills. A huge part of gender critical feminism is the idea that femininity must be painful to fit into normative ideals.

It’s sad knowing I’ll probably never work in video games again but like…how can I ever trust these companies after Respawn sold me a “look how inclusive we are!” Song & dance then tossed me mid-IVF?
Riot fired me during a cancer scare. I said this to folks at Respawn who convinced me they were better, & they were right. They out-cruel-tied Riot. That’s definitely better by some metric.
Just feels like I wasted a decade of time on a career that never wanted me & got my heart broken by a lot of milquetoast allies who I never should’ve trusted to actually do inclusion work.

The idea that adult life ends when a child is born is such a uniquely American idea that I will never understand as a Cuban American. My parents’ social lives continued when I was born, why wouldn’t mine?
Children can absolutely be incorporated into adult lives. This stark isolation of parents is not a universal reality.
My parents took me to nice restaurants, museums, classical music concerts, family parties that ran to 2 AM. We traveled internationally from when I was a baby. I knew how to behave around adults & would quietly sit there with a book surrounded by a community that loved me.

CW: pregnancy

Can’t leave the house because it might hurt the pregnancy. No one texts other than to ask about the pregnancy. No one visits because of the pregnancy. I’ve been informed my family will be sending baby gift cards on my birthday because of the pregnancy.
CW: pregnancy

Theoretically I knew that I would stop being a person once I was pregnant but jfc today isn’t helping make that easier.
Just want the freedom to go out for brunch or see a movie or something.

My parents are back from Europe & want me to visit them. In Florida. While pregnant with a high risk of miscarriage pregnancy. They insist that I’m being prejudiced towards republicans by saying I’m not safe there. Can someone please reassure me I’m not crazy to fear going home?
They way they keep calmly insisting they’ve read the laws & there’s nothing to fear & I’m overreacting is really getting to me.
Am I crazy or I’m being gaslit? They gaslight me a lot so it’s nothing new but this, specifically, is gaslighting right?
