DEVELOPING STORY:
Lesotho airline, Mohahlaula has opened a criminal case against Liqhobong, @DiamondsLetseng, Mothae and Kao mines for allegedly acquiring airspace permits fraudulently.
Mohahlaula Airlines boss Phafane Nkotsi says using foreign airlines to
transport Lesotho diamonds contraves the country's Mining and Mineral Act 2005 and Civil Aviation Act 2008. He says his company's insistence on mining companies to comply with Lesotho laws attracted a comment from
Commissioner of Mines that "you (Mohahlaula) are dealing with giants, they will not agree on compliance." He accuses Minister of Transport Matjato Moteane of asking @MatekaneSam to "intervene in the matter."
"In January 2023, Minister of Transport, PS and Director of Civil Aviation met with Prime Minister and explained the governing legislation to him. It was then agrees that it was within the Director's purview to stop issuing these licenses
and the Mines were instructed to comply, this decision was duly communicated to the mines on 25 January 2023." Despite this, he alleges mines continue to use foreign airline operators to transport diamonds.
