This story has stuck with me for years 👇

“A successful businessman on vacation was at the pier of a small coastal village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked...
Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna.

The businessman complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The fisherman proudly replied,

“Every morning, I go out in my boat for 30 minutes to fish. I’m the best fisherman in the village”.
The businessman, perplexed, then asks the fisherman,

“If you’re the best, why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish? What do you do the rest of the day?”
The fisherman replied,

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, spend quality time with my wife, and every evening we stroll into the village to drink wine and play guitar with our friends. I have a full and happy life.”
The businessman scoffed, “I'm a successful CEO & have a talent for spotting business opportunities. I can help you be more successful. You should spend more time fishing & with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats...
...eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats with many fishermen. Instead of selling your catch to just your friends, you can scale to sell fish to thousands. You could leave this small coastal fishing village and move to the big city, where you can grow your empire.”
The fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the businessman replied, “15 – 20 years.”

“But what then?” Asked the fisherman.
The businessman laughed and said,

“That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions!”

“Millions – then what?”
The businessman said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, spend time with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your friends.”
3 lessons I've taken from this throughout my career:

1. Work to live > Live to work

Don't wait to "fish a little, play with your kids, spend time with your wife, sip wine and play your guitar with your friends.”
2. Work smarter, not harder

Identify the 20% of activities that are going to drive 80% of the results. With that mindset, you might be able to work for 30min a day like the fisherman.
3. Avoid the trap of always chasing 'more'

A slice of the pie tastes better than force-feeding the full pie. Just like your business does not need to appeal to everyone.

I started writing copy 8+ years ago.

And made hundreds of mistakes along the way.

I wish I had learned these 7 quick-hitting copywriting tips when starting out:
Merciless Editing:

Be generous when writing copy (write as much as you want).

Be ruthless when editing copy (edit as if it costs you money).
Transition Words:

Stop writing boring copy.

Use transition words like:

• But
• And
• Still
• You see
• However
• Moving on

This helps you abruptly start a new paragraph/sentence.

And increase flow & continuity in your copy.

99% of the cold emails and DMs I receive are hot garbage.

But I'm about to show you the best cold email I've received in YEARS.

This email was so damn good, I all but replied:

"Take my money!"

Here are 7 reasons why it worked (and how you can replicate it):
Before we dive in:

I want you to carefully read every word in the email as you go through this thread.

Notice how there isn't one word that's out of place.

Every line transitions perfectly into the next line.

Note: Read the tweet first, then the full image.

Okay, let's go ↓
1. Personalization

Not a novel concept by any stretch...

But executed perfectly here.

The service I'm being pitched on is related to my newsletter.

So instead of sending me a cold DM on Twitter, he replies to the welcome email of my newsletter and starts with a compliment. Image

At 25 years old, I managed the customer retention strategy for a company valued at $559,000,000.

Here are 7 tactics that helped us climb to the top of our industry (steal them for your business):
I spent 3 years working at FanDuel from 2016-2019.

Online sports gambling was federally legalized in the U.S. in 2018.

I was tasked with setting up the CRM infrastructure for one of the first online sportsbooks in the country.

Here are 7 tactics that took us to the top 👇
1/ Set up your data infrastructure

I start here because if you don’t have a handle on your data...

You’re shooting yourself in the foot.

Data allows you to segment, personalize, and automate 80% of your marketing campaigns.

There's a reason why we keep watching the same movies over & over again.

It's because of The Hero's Journey storytelling framework.

Here's how this 12-step formula worked its magic in Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone (and how you should use it in your copywriting): Image
1. The Ordinary World

The story begins in the hero's ordinary world - safe and comfortable.

This stage establishes the hero's everyday life and environment.

Here's how Harry Potter establishes The Ordinary World:
Harry lives with his cruel aunt, uncle, and cousin.

He is unaware of his true identity as a wizard and the magical world beyond his mundane life.

Editing is often the most time-consuming part of writing.

You're constantly fighting tired eyes, brain fog, & the desire to be DONE already...

But that's all changing now.

I couldn't believe how quickly I was able to proofread & edit my writing using these 18 ChatGPT prompts:
"Identify any weak arguments in my copy and suggest ways to strengthen them."
"How can I improve the flow and readability of this copy?"
