Android 14 Beta 4 just dropped, so here’s my thread covering what’s new 🧵
Sidenote: I’m only covering changes that were added since Android 14 Beta 3, so there won’t be a lot! If you want to see what the previous Developer Previews/Betas introduced, check out my earlier threads: twitter.com/MishaalRahman/…
Houston, we have a liftoff 🚀! The new Easter egg is here in Android 14 Beta 4, and it’ll delight any space sim enthusiasts out there. I don’t know what the heck I’m doing, but here’s a first look at the new Easter egg! I bet @dsandler had a LOT of fun with this one.
To activate the Easter egg, open Settings > About Phone > Android version and repeatedly tap on “Android version” until you see the Android 14 logo floating in space. Hold down on the logo and you’ll see the “stars” speed by and eventually, you’ll take off on your new mission 🫡
If you fly around enough, I think you’ll hit some celestial bodies. Let me know if you spot them!
This Easter egg isn’t Android 14’s only space-related homage. The logo itself is a riff on the Apollo 14 mission patch, and the new droid statue is dressed as an astronaut.
The SystemUI app has a new icon: The Android 14 patch! It’s adaptive, too, but it’s not like you’ll ever see the SystemUI icon on your home screen anyway!

The status bar icon for “mute” / “silent” mode has been changed. Here’s before (left, Android 14 Beta 3) versus after (right, Android 14 Beta 4).

The build number is UPB4.230623.005, by the way. Factory images/OTA files for Pixels haven't gone out yet.
Here's a more mobile-optimized video showing me accessing the Easter egg for those who are asking.
"Speech" settings have been moved from Settings > System > Keyboard to Settings > System > Languages.

I bought a used Pixel 7 Pro recently and thought it was a shame that Google's battery health feature hasn't been released.

It'd be nice to see how many charge cycles it's had or the estimated % of its original capacity. Fortunately, Google's made it possible in Android 14! 🧵 Image
A few days back, I commented on some new BatteryManager APIs Google added in Android 14. Two of the APIs (cycle count & charging status) are public while the rest (manufacturing date, date of first use, charging policy, state of health) are system APIs.

Taking a deeper look, though, and it seems like the new system APIs can be called by any app that holds the BATTERY_STATS permission. This is a signature|privileged|development permission; "development" permissions can be granted to non-system apps through the 'pm grant' command!

Haven't confirmed yet, but given that this demo is shown on a device with Google Kids Space installed, I'm guessing that this new "kids mode" navigation bar is tied to it.
As in, once Kids Space is enabled on a device running Android 13+, this new "kids mode" nav bar will be shown. The nav bar buttons are larger, the recents overview button is missing, and the nav bar always appears even in full screen apps.
Google hasn't commented/announced this change yet, but I did ask for information on this and am waiting to hear back. I'm assuming it's as simple as what I just described, though.

On phones, the default lock screen shortcuts are Device Controls on the left and Quick Access Wallet on the right.

On tablets/large screens, the default lock screen shortcuts are Device Controls on the left and notetaking on the right. ImageImage
The Notes role is currently disabled by default in Android 14 beta builds, but when it's enabled, you'll be able to set a default Notes app through Settings.

To qualify, the default Notes app needs an activity with the android.intent.action.CREATE_NOTE intent filter.
Once the user sets the app as the Notes role holder, the app is granted the LAUNCH_CAPTURE_CONTENT_ACTIVITY_FOR_NOTE permission (if it requests it), which lets it use the API to request SystemUI to take a screenshot on its behalf.

A few folks have asked me if Pixels will still get that "battery health" feature I spotted in the Android 13 QPR betas.

While the feature was removed from the SettingsIntelligence app in Android 14 Beta 1, there's a chance it could be brought back.

Android 14 adds new public APIs to get the battery charging cycle count and the battery charging status (normal, static threshold, adaptive threshold, always on power). Image
There are also new system APIs to get the battery manufacturing date, date of first usage, and state of health (remaining estimated full charge capacity relative to the rated capacity in %).

Google has announced that in Android 14, Health Connect "will be a core part of Android and available on all Android mobile devices." As I previously reported, this is because Health Connect is being shipped as part of a new, mandatory Project Mainline module. Image
Health Connect in Android 14 will introduce a new exercise routes feature to let users share maps of their workouts and improvements to menstrual cycle logging. And because it's a new Mainline module, it can be updated through Google Play System Updates.
Here's a screenshot of Health Connect integrated into Privacy settings. Image
