Android 14 is rolling out for the Pixel 4a 5G and later starting TODAY! The update brings more customization, control, and accessibility features. If you haven’t been on the beta and want to know what new features are in Android 14, here’s a summary of the highlights: Image Google says that several of the large-screen features originally planned for Android 14 were made available as updates to Android 13. This is because the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold shipped with Android 13 QPR3, so these features had to be ready for their launch.

I bought a used Pixel 7 Pro recently and thought it was a shame that Google's battery health feature hasn't been released.

It'd be nice to see how many charge cycles it's had or the estimated % of its original capacity. Fortunately, Google's made it possible in Android 14! 🧵 Image A few days back, I commented on some new BatteryManager APIs Google added in Android 14. Two of the APIs (cycle count & charging status) are public while the rest (manufacturing date, date of first use, charging policy, state of health) are system APIs.

Haven't confirmed yet, but given that this demo is shown on a device with Google Kids Space installed, I'm guessing that this new "kids mode" navigation bar is tied to it. As in, once Kids Space is enabled on a device running Android 13+, this new "kids mode" nav bar will be shown. The nav bar buttons are larger, the recents overview button is missing, and the nav bar always appears even in full screen apps.

On phones, the default lock screen shortcuts are Device Controls on the left and Quick Access Wallet on the right.

On tablets/large screens, the default lock screen shortcuts are Device Controls on the left and notetaking on the right. ImageImage The Notes role is currently disabled by default in Android 14 beta builds, but when it's enabled, you'll be able to set a default Notes app through Settings.

To qualify, the default Notes app needs an activity with the android.intent.action.CREATE_NOTE intent filter.

A few folks have asked me if Pixels will still get that "battery health" feature I spotted in the Android 13 QPR betas.

While the feature was removed from the SettingsIntelligence app in Android 14 Beta 1, there's a chance it could be brought back.

Android 14 adds new public APIs to get the battery charging cycle count and the battery charging status (normal, static threshold, adaptive threshold, always on power). Image

Google has announced that in Android 14, Health Connect "will be a core part of Android and available on all Android mobile devices." As I previously reported, this is because Health Connect is being shipped as part of a new, mandatory Project Mainline module. Image Health Connect in Android 14 will introduce a new exercise routes feature to let users share maps of their workouts and improvements to menstrual cycle logging. And because it's a new Mainline module, it can be updated through Google Play System Updates.

Here’s what’s new with Android for Cars (Android Auto and Android Automotive OS), as announced at #GoogleIO 2023. The biggest announcement IMO is Android Automotive OS 14 based on Android 14 and the new multi-screen feature it’ll bring 👀 Image Before I get ahead of myself, though, let’s recap Google’s announcements, starting with why you should care. Google expects the # of cars running Android Automotive OS with Google built-in to nearly double by the end of 2023.

One of the most annoying parts about using most Android tablets or foldables is being forced to flip the device over because an app doesn't support landscape mode.

This is a big issue on the OPPO Find N2, for example. Fortunately, there's a fix. Here's how it works.🧵 Image If you aren't familiar with this problem or don't think it's a big deal, watch this part of @Captain2Phones's OPPO Find N2 review (@ 4:25). The N2 has a "widebody" inner screen that default to landscape mode.

Google Play has just announced a new data deletion policy that I welcome 🎉

If your Android app allows users to create an account, then Google Play will eventually require you to offer a way for users to initiate account AND data deletion from within the app and from the web. Google Play will require that the web link for account/data deletion be provided to users through your app's Data Safety section, as shown in the GIF embedded above. This is so users can request deletion WITHOUT reinstalling your app.
