1/ This is an interesting thread from a Ukrainian soldiers going through Western military training in Germany. Key points that stand out: "They do not rely on electronic devices at all, and the fact that we go on missions with Chinese smartphones and tablets was wild for them."
2/ "But after "Kropyva", I don't want to go back to paper docs at all. The same for quadcopters - the concept of DJI Mavics and the use of civilian copters is simply not even in their plans. Of course, they study our war, but they are still surprised that we use it (quadcopters)… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
3/ (For the record, "Kropyva" is a Ukrainian proprietary intelligence mapping software developed for planning, calculations, and orientation that is used by hundreds of units throughout Ukraine). armysos.com.ua/defense-mappin…
4/ More from the Ukrainian soldier: "For a week, we were taught to read maps, take the azimuth, transfer the azimuth from the compass to the map and vice versa. When we told them that we use electronic cards on tablets and phones, they did not take us seriously."
5/ "They have different drone types, but this is purely brigade level. This shows that in addition to the war with the aborigines in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, the Americans have not participated in a serious war for a long time. Their army does not have an analogue of the Chinese… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
6/ The points about Western militaries not having the equivalents of cheap, commercial-type drones for tactical ISR is a major topic of deliberation in the US military today. defenseone.com/threats/2023/0…

1/ THREAD: This week, Russia hosted its first Future Technologies Forum. Key theme at the event was Russia's high-tech and industrial survival amidst sanctions. Putin delivered main points about his country - translated below:
2/ "Russia will move forward without looking back at other countries, but without isolating itself from them. The transfer of the Russian economy, the social sphere and authorities to a new management model based on Big Data is a fundamental task."
3/ "Dependence on foreign technology platforms poses a threat to Russia's national security, this is what our enemies are striving for. Earlier, Russia bought ready-made technologies abroad, but now it is doing everything to provide for itself."

1/ THREAD on the bureaucratic and logistical issues encountered by Russian drone developers, especially those who wish to build their UAVs for the military - from a Russian-language Telegram channel. Main points below. https://t.co/fS1q20kz2At.me/dronesrussia/2…
2/ "If a Russian official comes running to a team of drone developers or assemblers with a promise of support and a "green light" at all levels, the team get very concerned and asks that official not to interfere with its work. Because..."
3/ ..."the team knows that this official does not understand what to do next. He basically does not know how to organize drone production and what the "green light" should mean in practice."

1/ QUICK THREAD highlighting the questions raised by many in Russia about the events of the past 48 hours. Clearly, lots of confusion and "wtf"-type comments about the state, the military and Wagner. A few highlights below from "Two Majors" pro-Kremlin Telegram channel.

2/ "Of course, this is not a show. Aviation was downed, pilots have died. (Wagner) almost reached the capital within 8 hours. The question - where was the Minister of Defense Shoigu? Where was his appeal to the military?
3/ "The President spoke and clearly stated that this was a military mutiny. And where is the leadership of the Defense Ministry during the Wagner armed unit approach to Moscow? Or are the FSB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Rosgvardiya functions to stop such military… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

1/ A few quick thoughts about Prigozhin's seemingly momentous "March of 10,000" that was stopped today. These are very preliminary thoughts, and much can change in the coming days as this situation settles down one way or another. nytimes.com/live/2023/06/2…
2/ The March of 10,000 refers to the force of mercenary units, mainly Greeks, employed by Cyrus the Younger to attempt to wrest the throne of the Persian Empire from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Ultimately, this was part of a civil conflict and the march exposed weakness in the… https://t.co/g2N9vrIEVztwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Today's Russia is obviously not similar to the ancient Persian Empire, but there are some similarities insofar as the ability by a small rebel force to march deep into the heart of the state without meeting significant resistance.
