The Daily Mail is running what looks set to be a week-long campaign against electric cars

One of its central claims is that EVs are "not green"

This is FALSE

The Mail's figures are from 2020, were debunked at the time & relate to a car that's been discontinued

🧵
The Daily Mail claims "VW's e-Golf becom[es] more environmentally friendly only after 77,000 miles, according to the manufacturer's own figures"

Problem 1: Production of the e-Golf was discontinued nearly three years ago, in December 2020
The Daily Mail claims the discontinued e-Golf needs 77,000 miles to start saving carbon vs a diesel

Problem 2: The correct figure is more like 16,000 miles (25,000km), as I showed back in February 2020

In light of *that* BBC News article on a North Sea oil and gas producer wanting to produce more oil and gas, here are a few home truths

1/4 UK oil production is in terminal decline, with or without new fields
2/ The same is true for the UK's North Sea gas production – because we burned most of it already
3/ Extracting more oil and gas is likely to mean the world burns more oil and gas – econ 101

Per CCC, net global impact will be more CO2 – even if 97% of UK prod. is offset by cuts elsewhere

⏩There's no such thing as "environmentally friendly" oil

The Sun paid for a big UK poll on net-zero but forgot to report the key finding

Maybe they didn't want you to know that there's HUGE, cross-party public support for net-zero?

65% support net-zero
19% opposed
+46 net support

+23 net support (Con 2019)
+72 (Lab)
+72 (LD) Image
Some other details of the poll that the Sun has avoided drawing attention to…

Banning new North Sea licences is very popular with Labour / LD voters (but Tories hate it) Image
Similarly, while the public overall is opposed to banning sales of new gas boilers by 2025 / petrol cars by 2030, both policies enjoy fairly robust net support from Labour / LD voters Image

NEW ANALYSIS

The UK would need LESS imported gas under Labour's climate & energy plans, than with the current Conservative govt

➡️Energy secretary Grant Shapps' claim that Labour wld make UK more "reliant on tyrants" for gas is FALSE

THREAD

carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-wo… Image
Labour has pledged to end new North Sea licences if it wins the next election

In response, Shapps has repeatedly claimed this'd make UK reliant on gas imports from "tyrants like Putin"

Awkwardly for Shapps, it's actually his govt's plans that'd leave UK needing more imports Image
The reason for Shapps' mistake is that Labour's pledge on North Sea licences is only one part of their plans

Labour also pledges to decarbonise UK electricity sooner than current govt – by 2030 instead of by 2035

Guess what that'd mean? Less gas demand

There are many falsehoods in this widely-shared thread disputing how cheap wind energy is today

One eg: "Steve" claims lower running hours have made gas power efficiency lower, "doubling the cost"

This is easily, provably false

46.6% – avg CCGT eff in 2000
49.9% – avg in 2021 Image
You are of course welcome to lap up this sort of sleight of hand, if it reinforces your priors

For those interested in actual evidence, the latest IPCC report says offshore wind costs "decreased by 50%" between AR5 and AR6 Image

Running all of the UK's cars on synthetic 'e-fuels' would take FIVE TIMES as much electricity as for EVs

33m cars burning e-fuels would need more electricity than the UK currently uses for all purposes (!)

THREAD with numbers

1/ Image
Last wk, I factchecked Rowan Atkinson in the Guardian, inc his suggestion that e-fuels are a sensible way forward

The Sunday Times also just mentioned e-fuels

And the idea of using e-fuels is a key part of pushback on the 2030 combustion car ban

But are they a good idea?

2/ ImageImage
Before coming back to my chart, let's first ask if they would actually help tackle climate change?

Good news!

✅e-fuels can cut CO2 almost as much as EVs

(IF they are made using clean electricity, grey arrows)
