Pro-growth lefties accuse their opponents of being out of touch with working-class preferences and focused on consumption instead of production but what do they imagine planning support looks like for, say, "fresh bananas at every American 7/11" among the world's banana workers?
I think we better get planting those pawpaw trees 🤷‍♂️
That means fewer bananas for American workers, but if we're focused on production not consumption then the expropriation and suppression of Chiquita Corp. is obviously a huge win for the global working class (as well as the environment).
There need not be any moralism here ("When you eat a banana, you are bad") there just... won't be bananas. Because it doesn't make any other-than-capitalist sense to create a world-spanning daily banana infrastructure for people in Columbus, Ohio.
Americans saying, "No daily banana, no world democracy 😡" is not socialist politics, no matter what class those Americans belong to
@MCDeiro ...and something tells me Americans are last on everyone else's charity list
@chmpagnecomrade @FabiusMayhem Rather that's the mass-mobilization of banana workers, and the way we can help them it seems to me is to struggle with the American security apparatus.
@gabriel_mathy They're imported at .10 and sold for a dollar. Banana harvesters have some of the world's worst agricultural working conditions.
@gabriel_mathy and even if we couldn't, shouldn't we expect a more even distribution of hazard-exposure over time in a fairer world? or do they just get paid better for their trouble?
@BuddyYakov Why aren't you for the creation of a vibrant domestic pawpaw industry? We don't need national fruit security?
@BuddyYakov Unless the idea is that we're going to keep hoarding medical IP so they keep sending us 10 billion pounds of bananas...
@BuddyYakov and we won't maintain the same barriers between people and treatment, anywhere in the world. I don't think we'll lack for space in the social consumption fund or w/e for those who are working in this noble and clearly useful area.
@BuddyYakov @EconomicsBread We do hold a lot of IP! 🙃

The crazy part is that's way less (in real terms) than top freelancers used to get forge.medium.com/how-much-is-a-…
In the '50s, Reader's Digest was paying the equivalent of over $10/word on the top *unsolicited submissions*
Freelancing at $10/word would be wild. It'd be like "Filed a book review, time to chill for 2-3 months"

Must be very strange for liberal social justice people of that generation to feel like "Wow, I really did my job, made a difference, lived up to my ideals" and then to take a look at the actual state of the world

This is a good review. I know the West Coast story much better than any of the other regional ones, but there the settler attack was so much about destroying the indigineous life-worlds, rendering it materially impossible to reproduce native societies harpers.org/archive/2022/1…
Including, like, having militias guard water sources in order to drive people into slavery
*indigenous! spelled correctly in the book! 😬
