If a vote for Kamala is a chess move, what are the next three moves? Not a "gotcha" q, I really wanna know. It seems like the answer is "It's the kind you make when you're in check and have no choice" and that's where the metaphor breaks down for me because it's not a game and losing now vs. over the next decade/5 moves is roughly the same amount unacceptable.

Hmmm I find this short piece kinda unconvincing. Someone argue with me! lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v45/…
Image The psychic dimension of politics is not unimportant, but it is not nearly as important as the material dimension of politics, and the conditions of western discourse are preventing us from talking about that part of the conflict realistically at all

Pro-growth lefties accuse their opponents of being out of touch with working-class preferences and focused on consumption instead of production but what do they imagine planning support looks like for, say, "fresh bananas at every American 7/11" among the world's banana workers? I think we better get planting those pawpaw trees 🤷‍♂️

The crazy part is that's way less (in real terms) than top freelancers used to get forge.medium.com/how-much-is-a-… In the '50s, Reader's Digest was paying the equivalent of over $10/word on the top *unsolicited submissions*

Oh the white South African billionaire is afraid of a left-wing "mind virus" sweeping the globe? Every day a new challenge not to post screenshots from my book!

People thinking that these AIs are thinking — or that thinking is what these AIs are doing — is going to Jokerfy me. I gave Percival Everett's robot-frying script from Dr. No to the robot

This is a good review. I know the West Coast story much better than any of the other regional ones, but there the settler attack was so much about destroying the indigineous life-worlds, rendering it materially impossible to reproduce native societies harpers.org/archive/2022/1… Including, like, having militias guard water sources in order to drive people into slavery

Jeez, this is not why I'm on Twitter! I like sharing links to my writing and having conversations with friends and acquaintances and hyping good movies and stuff like that If I want to talk shit about people I talk with my irl friends without leaving a paper trail. If you DM talking shit about someone I will probably be like "Haha, well it takes all kinds"

Has anyone else been watching this season of Below Deck Mediterranean? I think they're making the boats too big now. The yacht is in Malta and it keeps hitting stuff trying to dock because it's too big and there's a labor shortage.

"The Californian Ideology" is a useful essay but people should not uncritically adopt its terms. What they describe as "the technological optimism of the new left" is a mischaracterization that goes to the roots of the essay and has been repeated ever since. Not only did the California New Left lack "technological optimism," they bombed hella computers, including centers of the "counter culture." Those guys had to put up bars and hire guards.

They should take videos of Joe Biden calling Pell Grantees with $17K in loans to tell them that they're good now "This is Joe, just wanted to make sure you saw the news. I know you've been working really hard for a long time, don't think no one has noticed..."

Hey, that's Paul R. *and* his uncredited wife Anne Ehrlich’s 1968 book “The Population Bomb“... which ushered in decades of policies of coercive sterilization and worse, worldwide. ZPG coined by demographer Kingsley Davis, who was a Hoover Institution fellow from '81 til his death in the late '90s. Just across campus from the Ehrlichs

Wild how thin the audience for any kind of anti-consumerist orientation seems to be these days. Very controversial all of the sudden to say we should be creating less trash. Weird timing, considering the various biospheric environmental crises. All attempts to politicize the use of servant app platforms have failed, much to my frustration.

Nathan Fielder is doing art, okay? God. What he's doing is directly informed by decades of video and performance art that has sought to interrogate people's everyday assumptions. It's derrivative, lackluster *art*. He's working right at the intersection of performance art, comedy, and magic. Who else is doing that? No one.
