@KodanshaManga @makotoyukimura @VIZMedia THU at #SDCC2023 - i’m at the San Diego Central Library for the 11 am Junji Ito panel… if you were thinking of coming, the room is full. I barely got in when I arrived at 10 am. You can try, but your next oppty is the @VIZMedia panel on Friday at 10 am

Image
Image
Image
@KodanshaManga @makotoyukimura @VIZMedia The panel prior to Junji Ito panel at the San Diego Central Library is about book bans and graphic novels - they shared a horrifying anecdote of a guy who printed postcards an “adult content” panel in Gender Queer and used it to berate teachers at an elementary school
@KodanshaManga @makotoyukimura @VIZMedia The Junji Ito #itoverse @VIZMedia panel at SD central library is happening! Beware, “graphic imagery” ahead! #SDCC2023
Image
Image
Junji Ito at the Library #SDCC2023 - His start in manga: "Before I started grade school, I was drawing manga for fun. I came across Kazuo Umezu’s work and I got into horror manga." (You can get into Umezz manga too -- @vizmedia is publishing My Name is Shingo! Image
@VIZMedia Big push at #SDCC2023 for the new collection of Soichi manga by Junji Ito -- head to the VIZ booth #2813 to get prints, Soichi face basks and candle crowns. Here's the Soichi manga trailer fr. @VIZMedia
Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
Q: What do you enjoy about creating horror stories?
A: For me, it’s really interesting for me to visualize things that don’t exist in reality. What’s unique about horror is the balance between the horrible and the grotesque.
From Tomie by Junji Ito
Giant eyeball in the sky, from Remina by Junji Ito
Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
Q: What's the future of horror manga?
A: If I knew the answer, I’d do it myself. (laughs) I’d like to give birth to a new type of horror that no one has thought of yet.
#itoverse
Image
Image
Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
Q: What's the scariest horror movie?
A: When I was in 6th grade I saw a trailer for The Exorcist – it was really shocking. When I was in high school, I finally saw the whole movie. It was fun and scary at the same time – it really blew me away.
#itoverse

Image
Image
Image
Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
Q: Why do you think horror is so popular?
A: The main draw of horror is about the unknown. With horror, you’re faced with the unknown, but you’re given some kind of resolution in the end. It’s part of the human psychological need to know the answers.
From The Liminal Zone by Junji Ito from VIZ Media
Image
Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
Q: When creating a story, have you ever thought, “this is too much, I better not do this?"
A: There’s a part in Tomie when she’s dismembered, & new Tomies comes out of these body parts. I had some second thoughts, but I ended up drawing it anyway. (laughs)
Image
Tomie by Junji Ito, from VIZ Media
Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
Q: What’s your inspiration for Black Paradox?
A: I watched a TV documentary on the history of space accidents, like when rockets explode when launching. I thought it was scary, but instead of a space race, it's about a race to the afterlife.
#itoverse

Junji Ito @ #SDCC2023
'With Uzumaki, I thought about how in manga, the spirals are on the cheek of the character is kind of fun. I thought, what if I draw the spiral tighter? How that would affect how you see a spiral?'
#itoverse
Bakabon from Tensai Bakabon by Fujio Akatsuka
A man obsessed with spirals, from Uzumaki by Junji Ito

Dropped by the @fantagraphics tables at #SDCC2023 to pick up Minami’s Lover, a fascinating, 1-volume 1980s-era Garo manga about a high school-age couple, whose relationship is tested when the girl, Chiyomi mysteriously shrinks down to 6” tall. https://t.co/ABe25s8eqcfantagraphics.com/products/minam…

Also glad to get “My Picture Diary” by Fujiwara Maki at the @DandQ #SDCC2023 panel on Saturday. besides the lovely details on this hardcover, this book is a poignant look at what it was like to live/raise a family with indie manga legend Yoshiharu Tsuge https://t.co/DN5B20JxHqdrawnandquarterly.com/news/my-pictur…

Image
Image
Image
@DandQ It’s particularly fascinating to read My Picture Diary by Fujiwara Maki because it offers a different PoV of the family life depicted in Tsuge’s Man Without Talent. I met Tsuge, his son Shosuke (who’s a toddler in this book) and Asakawa Mitsuhiro at Angouleme in 2020

Image

@DandQ Capped off #SDCC2023 with a lovely dinner of tapas and paella at Sevilla with super librarians @klg19, Megan M. fr @librarycongress & @JRLibrarian, comix studs @PKuperArt @ecampbelldammit @zander_cannon and my comic-con besties, @Comixace & @BrigidAlverson - life is good 🍷

One takeaway from #ax2024 is how many people desperately want to draw manga, but don’t know how to get to the level where they’ll get published / can go pro. When i tell them that if they want to work in Japan, they should learn to speak/read Japanese, they’re so sad.
After talking with JP manga & US comics editors, I’ve heard a few common themes / tips for aspiring manga / webtoon creators:

1. Start with one-shot short stories, and do a lot of them! It will help you build your storytelling muscles and develop your individual art style
A great way to start on your 1-shot story journey is to read 1-shot stories or early short-story works by manga artists — the Tatsuki Fujimoto “before chainsaw man” collections fr. @VIZMedia & Ryoko Kui (Delicious in Dungeon) collection fr @yenpress are terrific places to start.

I’ve been writing about manga publishing biz for a while, but webtoon publishing in N. America is something i’ve been curious about lately. Content & readership-wise, it overlaps with manga while being distinctly different in its business model and its mobile-first approach
