Pierre Poilievre makeover can’t hide the meanness

Poilievre 2.0 isn’t new. Like the rest of us, he is what he is. He is mean. He is a nasty piece of work, can’t help it. /1
/2
Pierre Poilievre wants to look like a hot, strapping man of the people. He won’t. It can’t be done. But the advisers of the federal Conservative Party leader demanded a makeover and events unfolded.

They got rid of his glasses — whether due to contacts or surgery we
/3 don’t know — and gave him T-shirts to wear under unstructured (stretchy, unlined) blazers, jeans, and summertime Tom Cruise-style aviators.

Now he looks like a man who forgot his glasses and had to assemble a vacation wardrobe after the airline lost his luggage.
/4 You may disagree. You may like the look.

But I think Poilievre looks ill-at-ease in his new snap-on tools, just as itchy as he looked in his business suits. Why didn’t they just buy him nicer glasses with a sturdy rim? Conservative Party stylists didn’t have much to work
/5 with and less to offer.

They should have consulted me. I buy all my husband’s clothes and I am all about tortoiseshell glasses, white linen shirts and Paige jeans with cotton jackets. Back to the fashion victim. Poilievre’s advisers told him to say that whether or not he
/6 wears glasses, he has the best vision for the country.

“Whether or not I wear glasses, I have the best vision for the country,” Poilievre told reporters as he campaigned in Niagara Falls this week. He then did that retro husband thing, saying his wife, the little lady,
/7 didn’t like the glasses, “so I have to keep her happy first and foremost.”

Nonsense. I’m trying to get my husband into blue Monty Don French chore wear but he says it’s too flashy for Loblaws. Similarly, Poilievre can say no, especially in his new, slower, deeper-voiced
/8 speaking style.

Margaret Thatcher lowered her voice to great effect, mainly because she had beliefs, pretty foul ones but still, and she stuck to them. Poilievre’s makeover won’t glue on because he doesn’t have beliefs, just personal resentments, and those come out fast
/9 and high-pitched, it’s the nature of the animal.

Poilievre 2.0 isn’t new. Like the rest of us, he is what he is. He is mean. He is a nasty piece of work, can’t help it.

Here’s what he did on Wednesday in Niagara Falls in his new encasement. He humiliated a local woman.
/10 He called her rented house a shack.

He told reporters about a small Niagara Falls home selling for $550,000, which he called a ridiculous figure. I looked it up. It’s a well-maintained 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom 1.5-storey home in a lovely neighbourhood. It has a detached
/11 garage, massive parking, a huge backyard, a party patio and the kind of awnings people are now reinstalling to fight extreme heat.

“He called it a shack. A shack,” said Asha Letourneau, the house’s young tenant, while her little dog bounced around. “That was a little
/12 embarrassing also because it’s not.”

Letourneau told the excellent local TV station CHCH that she saw Poilievre’s comments after working nights as a waitress. “It’s not the greatest house on the street,” she said gently, “but it’s definitely not a shack.”

She’s right.
/13 My high school friends in Kapuskasing lived in small postwar homes exactly like that. You can raise five children comfortably in non-monster houses. They’re not shacks, they’re terrific, and Toronto has many thousands of them.

Amazingly, Poilievre gave out her address,
/14 making Letourneau a public target on social media.

“On the American side, 15 minutes away,” Poilievre said, “you can get a big beautiful multi-level with a garage and a big lot for $217,000 Canadian. Why is it that you pay twice as much for a quarter of the home on the
/15 Canadian side of the border?”

Because it’s in Canada, that’s why.

If Poilievre says these things in scratchy new clothes, does that make his obliviousness, his cruelty, more palatable?
/16 His personality will be the makeover that never clicks, never sticks, never ends.

Nova Scotian's must read this - this Saltwire Article about bracket creep.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is the only first minister in Canada deliberately profiting off of inflation.

By failing to index income tax brackets to inflation, Houston is raising taxes by /1
/2 pushing taxpayers into higher tax brackets even though they can’t actually afford to pay more. That’s what economists call bracket creep.

Every other government in Canada has acknowledged that it is wrong to punish taxpayers simply for receiving a cost-of-living pay raise.
/3 Nine provinces and the federal government all have plans to index income tax rates next year to ensure bracket creep doesn’t occur.

Higher taxes
Bracket creep means that this year Nova Scotia taxpayers will be hit with a tax hike of up to $653 just because the province

I could not watch the whole presser, but this propagandist (PP) is twisting the narrative, as he always does. The Carbon Pricing comes back in the form of a rebate to Nova Scotian's. We would not be on the Federal program if Tim Houston did not remove the Cap and Trade program /1
/2 which Nova Scotian's have had for years, at no extra cost to taxpayers. Because Houston could not come up with a credible plan, his plan was to charge carbon pricing, but NOT give rebates. The Federal government stated the plan was NOT good enough to lower emissions.
/3 Houston then turns around and blames the Federal government for a problem HE CREATED. Anyway, we will now get a Carbon Rebate cheque every 4 months.

PoiLIEvre blames the federal government for something his party CREATED. Reminder, Harper was all for emissions

In a nutshell, this is what Bill C-18 does and it is not censorship. The bill would compel platforms like Meta and Google — which share, preview and direct users to online news content — to strike deals with the media publishers behind those stories, and face financial
/2 penalties if they don’t. A number of news publishers (including Torstar, which publishes the Toronto Star) have lobbied Ottawa regarding the bill, and already have deals in place with both companies for the sharing and repurposing of their content.
/3 “Facebook knows very well that they have no obligations under the act right now. Following Royal Assent of Bill C-18, the government will engage in a regulatory and implementation process. If the government can’t stand up for Canadians against tech giants, who will?”

Article from Bloomberg:
Wind power seen growing ninefold as Canada cuts carbon emissions

Canada is set for massive growth in wind power generation as it moves toward net zero emissions by 2050, a new report by the country’s energy regulator suggested.

The report models how /1
/2 energy consumption is expected to change under various scenarios as the world reduces its carbon emissions, and it projects electricity use will more than double in Canada from now until mid-century.

“Among all technologies, wind contributes the greatest amount of new
/3 generation by 2050, increasing ninefold from current levels,” the Canada Energy Regulator said, using a scenario it calls “global net zero” that assumes the world acts quickly enough to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050.

The regulator’s model sees the
