#1:🧵#KeepEyesOnSudan
Since June, tens of thousands of people from West Darfur's capital El Geneina+its surroundings have fled to #Chad seeking safety.
Over the past few days, @hrw researchers spoke to dozens of refugees, hearing stories of abuse+loss that are hard to comprehend.
#2: @hrw team heard dozens of accounts from survivors who fled after witnessing killings. Some civilians were gunned down in the streets while trying to flee. Many have lost everything, following months of fighting during which looting of homes & deliberate destruction were rife.
#3: Watchdogs, lawyers, and community leaders in El Geneina have been targeted. Some were killed. We are hearing of many cases of rape. The abuses peaked in mid-June in El Geneina, but have continued since then.
#4: The needs of those displaced are immense, and are not being met by a still nascent humanitarian response. Many have little access to food or water, and no electricity or adequate shelter. Their situation is only going to get worse as the rains start.
#5: In the coming days, we’ll share some of the harrowing individual stories we’ve heard and other insights from our research team. #KeepEyesOnSudan
