Thanks to the magnificent efforts of @LabWomenDec, the courage and foresight of MPs and Peers, and aided by apparent dawning awareness of the existence of something called public opinion, Labour appears to be finally taking steps towards sanity on women’s rights 🧵

Meanwhile, other people are also finally "getting it". They are feeling "angry and ashamed".

Once you’ve seen it you can’t unsee it.

All of a sudden the tide is turning.
Where does this leave Lib Dems? Unfortunately the last significant intervention made by Ed Davy was to insist rather angrily that women "quite clearly" can have penises.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives have had their tanks parked on Lib Dem ideological lawns for some time. Here is @KemiBadenoch on "freedom of association, freedom of conscience, the presumption of innocence" just today.

Unfortunately we have allowed the Tories to occupy the liberal ground by having precisely nothing to say on the scourge of cancel culture. In fact we have participated in it. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9…
Back in 2021 one of our first blog post asked how organisations including the Lib Dems would manage this inevitable situation. liberalvoiceforwomen.org/blog/womensrep…
We have been trying to offer @LibDems a paddle to row back from this mess. But instead of agreeing to talk to us the leadership has spent time, effort and money shutting down debate and trying to get members like us kicked out. liberalvoiceforwomen.org/blog/call-for-…
Despite how some of us have been treated, we would still prefer the party that many of us have invested so much in over the years to become recognisable again. We believe the UK needs a Liberal party, not a mindlessly "woke" one. We still hold out a hope that change is possible.
Because contrary to popular belief the majority of Lib Dems are "terfs". Some of them just haven’t realised it yet. When they do they are likely to be as ashamed and angry as @afneil
We are offering @EdwardJDavey not only messaging advice and a critical mass of supportive members, but actual tangible policy proposals which, if only they were allowed to be debated at conference, would bring the party properly back on track. liberalvoiceforwomen.org/blog/rethink
So far this has not been possible (we will be appealing this decision)
liberalvoiceforwomen.org/blog/motion-re…
Because we care about the outcome more than our feelings, we're not asking for apologies. We're asking you to give the party we helped build a chance to save itself.
Treat members like adults. Let us debate and let's resolve this. You can thank us in 2024.

Excellent news for #TransAwarenessWeek

The @libdems Federal Board has finally revised the party's Definition of Transphobia after 2 years of controversy, criticism and legal uncertainty.
beta.libdems.org.uk/code-of-conduc…
The change comes after the party received legal advice from two KCs, of which Karon Monaghan's can be viewed here liberalvoiceforwomen.org/s/Karon-Monagh… The second legal opinion has not yet been published.
We welcome the new Definition, which takes into account the @MForstater ruling and emphasises the need for "robust, passionate debate". This is a great improvement on the last version.

V encouraging performance by @EdwardJDavey on @BBCAnyQuestions Acknowledged:
✅ Importance of safeguards in GRA to prevent abuse
✅ Need for mature, open debate
✅ Importance of level playing field for women and girls' sports
✅ Gender ID is question of BELIEF
#RespectMySex
"The GRA allows people to change their gender, but it puts safeguards in to avoid abuse."
This is such an important acknowledgement @EdwardJDavey
Please have an urgent word with @agcolehamilton before these crucial safeguards are abandoned in Scotland.
#RespectMySex
"We have to listen and have an open, mature debate. Let us listen to each other, and let us show some kindness."
We couldn't agree more @EdwardJDavey
Let's work together to make sure this happens at Lib Dem Autumn Conference.

The interim report for the Cass Review of gender identity services for children and young people, out today, is VERY good news for everyone who wants to see evidence-based care for children and young people.
cass.independent-review.uk/publications/i…
Here are the key points in tweet form 👇
"The rapid increase in the number of children requiring support and the complex case-mix means that the current clinical model, with a single national provider, is not sustainable in the longer term."
"We need to know more about the population being referred and outcomes. There has not been routine and consistent data collection, which means it is not possible to accurately track the outcomes and pathways that children and young people take through the service."

Ever wondered why our party appears to have such a blind spot when it comes to the impact of our trans policies on women, LGB people, children, the wider social fabric?
Here is your answer:
libdemvoice.org/the-funny-thin…
The people who would ordinarily interrogate policies and flag up problems are literally frozen out of the channels that normally host debate, because people who are fundamentally opposed to discussion of the subject get to control the groups!
We take no pleasure in criticising our party's policies to an unlimited audience here on Twitter. Our preference would be to have these discussions with our colleagues on private Lib Dem members’ Facebook groups, at conference, etc.

We were disappointed to learn today that our motion to the Lib Dem Autumn Conference has been rejected.
liberalvoiceforwomen.org/policywomensvo…
Our motion addressed the issue of aggressive censorship of female academics, and the university sector's failure to uphold women's freedom of speech, and their rights to equality.
It cited @MForstater v CGD and the @akuareindorf Report, and asked conference to condemn the climate of violence, intimidation and abuse of gender critical academics.
