Statement from Climate Defiance founder Michael Greenberg, who was recently locked up by DHS under false charges:

"This is not an easy thing to write about but I just got out of jail. I was trapped in a 35 square foot cage. I slept on a bare metal shelf." (1/15) 🧵
"Denied a sleeping pad, I resorted to using my Brooks Adrenaline running shoes as a mattress. My shirt was my pillow. I was desperate for sleep and also unable to achieve it. I understood for the first time why 'sleep deprivation' counts as a torture technique."

(2/15)
"Roaches swarmed every surface. Anguished cries from mentally ill people rang through the halls. One man, removed from reality, spent much of the night bellowing about the 'hundred sheep' he owns."

(3/15)
"I got locked up because I confronted the venture capitalist Commerce Secretary, who is complicit in our nation's fossil fuel buildout. Serving on the board of the Export Import Bank, she sat silently by as, days ago, this bank insured a $400,000,000 loan to a gas titan." (4/15)
"She did nothing to stop the Alaska LNG project, which would ship so much gas to Japan that it would have a bigger footprint than Willow. How on earth does our country's top commerce official have nothing to say about such a disastrous deal related so closely to her work?" (5/15)
"You can see the video of our encounter with the Secretary here. Please watch. I want others to see this. I want others to make the choice to stand up in their own communities" (6/15) instagram.com/p/CvKVxnst5j3/…
"I was scared for my safety in jail. At one point, I was left alone in a hot van, handcuffed and unsure whether I would be forgotten in there. At another, I worried one of the inmates was about to get violent."

(7/15)
"One of the other Climate Defiance members who got arrested with me was denied lifesaving meds for two days - it's a small miracle he survived what could have been a lethal situation."

(8/15)
"Mostly what I experienced was boredom. Utter, utter boredom. Not 'lazy Saturday afternoon' boredom but boredom so profound I questioned how long my mental sanity would hold out. Minutes dripped by like hours."

(9/15)
"Time - ordinarily our most precious gift in this world - turned into a torture device. There were no phones. No magazines. No tvs. No books. It was just me and metal surrounding me."

(10/15)
"Jail was isolating. 'What am I doing with my life?' I asked myself that question more than once while stewing behind those metal bars." (11/15)
"I was miserable and I was also reminded of how lucky I was. My stay was nothing compared to the people who spend their whole lives in and out of prison - often because they have been denied access to legal economic opportunities."

(12/15)
"I wondered if I'd be dumped out on an empty sidewalk at the end, alone and sad. And yet when I got out I saw a big crowd of Climate Defiance activists waiting for me. I am not alone in this fight, I learned. We have community here and we take care of each other."

(13/15)
"Going to jail was not easy but it was needed. I am more resolved than ever. I will continue make good trouble until our politicians enact the solutions we need."

(14/15)
"If you are ready to stand with me, please comment here. Climate Defiance is working to welcome new members so we can scale up and win changes at the speed and scope this moment demands. We will respond to as many comments as possible!" (15/15)

BREAKING: We just swarmed the field at the Congressional Women's Softball Game. As rooftop snipers aimed their guns at us and Members of Congress begged us to evacuate, we held our ground.

This is an emergency. We act like it. 🧵
The Congressional Women’s Softball Game is an annual competition between politicians and journalists.

Unreal.

The media is **literally** “playing softball” with the very people they are supposed to hold to account. (2/16)
The press corps should not be playing games with Congress. Isn’t that obvious? (3/16)

We are broken.

As a society, as a people, as a species bringing our very home to the precipice of collapse, we are broken.

We have the resources - natural and technological - to thrive. Yet we squander it all. 🧵

(1/14)
The top 1% are emitting more than twice as much as the entirety of the bottom half.

The very people with the means to go solar or live in walkable communities are instead torching the planet for everyone. (2/14)
Millionaires alone are poised to burn through 72% of the remaining "carbon budget." It is one of the most profound injustices of our time.

Why is no one talking about this? (3/14)

17 late-night thoughts about confronting the climate crisis:

1. Don't ignore your grief. Your grief is just and righteous and wholly appropriate. Lean into it. Own it. Embrace it. It will be your superpower. 🧵
2. Be a part of a group. Unless you have a once-in-a-generation talent for writing, hacking, repelling off buildings, or inventing technologies, your accomplishments will be so much bigger when you find an affinity group or crew to throw down with.
3. Related to 2, there are almost no political events that cannot be fully shut down with a group of 20 committed people.

Unless you're protesting the President, VP, or Secretary of State, your target will not have enough security to remove 20 people. So they will flee.

BREAKING: braving air we cannot breathe we just TOOK OVER State Street in Chicago, feet away from Biden’s meal with millionaires.

The President just shoved down our throats a 2,000,000,000 cubic foot per day fracked gas pipeline.

This cannot stand. This will not stand.
We took BOLD action today in Chicago today because more new fossil fuels will make our planet uninhabitable. Full stop.
Joe Biden has broken too many promises. We can no longer sit idly by and just watch it happen. There is too much on the line.

BREAKING: we just fully shut down a fundraiser headlined by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Schumer took $283,200 from NextEra. In exchange he greenlit the Mountain Valley Pipeline.

This is a death sentence for us. So we shut down his event. And we did not apologize.
We tell it as it is. Approving the Mountain Valley Pipeline is an act of ecocide. Full stop.

It would have the climate impact of adding 19,000,000 new passenger vehicles to the road. It would drive 89,000,000 metric tons of climate pollution. Yearly. This is not ok. (2/12)
We need to cut emissions in half this decade to avert catastrophe. Approving brand-new fossil fuel projects in the Year of Our Lord 2023 is madness. Pure madness. Don’t you see? (3/12)

BREAKING: today we turned up to a keynote by the pro-pipeline U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

We were peaceful. Her henchmen brutalized us anyway.

One of us left with bruises the size of baseballs. Another was dragged out *by the ears.* We have no words. No words.
Jennifer Granholm is not a climate champion. As we swarmed her speech she said we should wait til 2050 to hit net-zero. That's too late. That's a death sentence.

Right after saying she'd like to be out marching with us, she said "on the other hand."

What? What on earth?
Granholm stood by silently as a multibillion dollar multinational built a 700,000 barrel per day pipeline through treaty land.

She endorsed the Mountain Valley Pipeline.

Her own agency signed off on the $38,700,000,000 Alaska LNG Project.

This is hideous. This is grotesque.
