By proposing to “max out” the North Sea, the gov is
➡️ doing nothing to lower bills & risking our path to energy independence
➡️ undermining economic growth
➡️ abandoning any pretence of climate leadership & locking in a warmer planet
➡️ out of step w the public
Here’s why
🧵
1/ This will make us more dependant on volatile gas prices set by global markets
As former Tory Energy Minister (& now party chair) said last year “ it’s a myth that extracting more North Sea gas lowers prices”
Greater reliance on fossil fuels makes us less, not more, secure
2/ The UK has highest energy bills in western Europe *because* we’re over dependant on gas
UK energy bills are £9.8bn higher – some £158 per home – bc successive Conservative-led governments "cut the green crap"
Net zero retains A LOT of support
Public FAR MORE likely to think the gov isn't doing enough to address the climate crisis
These views are shared by EVERY demographic
10/ The quickest, cheapest way to lower bills, realise energy independence and secure and create jobs is to rollout clean renewable energy, which is also overwhelmingly popular with the public
A new department will not deliver much on its own, to work it will need
💪 strong SoS & ministers
✍️ authority to deliver across gov
💷 resources to deliver ambitious policy
But to really succeed, net zero must be driven by the PM & HMT…
A successful net zero strategy means it being the government’s economic strategy, which helpfully can also be a big part of your levelling up strategy & security strategy too
A PM & HMT committed to driving it through is what’ll make the difference…
Also likely to need a Net Zero Delivery Body - with a focus on a just transition - as recommended by @IPPR’s Environmental Justice Commission, & more recently, the Skidmore review
