By proposing to “max out” the North Sea, the gov is

➡️ doing nothing to lower bills & risking our path to energy independence
➡️ undermining economic growth
➡️ abandoning any pretence of climate leadership & locking in a warmer planet
➡️ out of step w the public

Here’s why

🧵 1/ This will make us more dependant on volatile gas prices set by global markets

As former Tory Energy Minister (& now party chair) said last year “ it’s a myth that extracting more North Sea gas lowers prices”

Greater reliance on fossil fuels makes us less, not more, secure Image

A new department will not deliver much on its own, to work it will need

💪 strong SoS & ministers
✍️ authority to deliver across gov
💷 resources to deliver ambitious policy

But to really succeed, net zero must be driven by the PM & HMT… A successful net zero strategy means it being the government’s economic strategy, which helpfully can also be a big part of your levelling up strategy & security strategy too

A PM & HMT committed to driving it through is what’ll make the difference…
