Zindagi Tamasha: Of Narrow Lanes and Narrower mindsets
A video goes viral, is taken out of context, the man behind it is threatened and his life turns upside down, this is the story of Zindagi Tamasha, and the story of Sarmad Khoosat trying to release Zindagi Tamasha.

They do say life imitates art.
The Youtube version may begin with a bittersweet message from the creator but once the movie starts, you forget about the controversies, and Sarmad's Magnum Opus takes center stage.
Whereas Joyland takes you inside the world of the characters in a deep character study, Zindagi Tamasha often leaves the viewer on the outside looking in, a voyeuristic look at the protagonists, the camera mimics the main plot line of the story,
which is people seeing a video the protagonist did not want us to see.
The lives of these people is often shot through window frames, wires, door panes, and even a bird cage, making the audience feel as caged as the characters in this world,
where a momentary expression of joy can ruin your life, and those of your loved ones, forever.
The banning of Zindagi Tamasha is more evidence of how we are made to feel so guilty, and labelled with insults, just for our creative expression,
so much so that just a mere "nara", or an allegation, is enough to enforce silence, as we all know the price of speaking up.
Arif Hasan as Rahat Khawaja puts in a phenomenal performance as the protagonist, his body language fatigues as he grows more defeated,
shrinking into himself by the end.
The heart of the movie is his relationship with his wife Farkhanda, played by the ethereal Samiya Mumtaz. The bond they share as the world turns against them is the soul of the movie.
The DOP, Khizeer Idrees, and the Art Director, Ahmed Shah, truly do some masterful work, the frames are poetry in motion. The Colorist, Fatimah Sattar, deserves a shout out here as well. The entire Sound team equally brings their A game.
At the end of the day, it is us who miss out on this audio-visual experience in the theaters as it was meant to be watched. Sarmad Khoosat weaves so much of the narrative in silences, montages, and walks through the neighbourhoods,
the gravity of those moments may be lost consuming this cinematic masterpiece on a tiny screen.
At the end of the day, what you take away from Zindagi Tamasha will say as much about you as it does about the movie. Movies are not meant to preach, they are meant to explore.
Zindagi Tamasha is as much about the perils of social media, art, family, love, marriage, and freedom of expression, as it is about religion, repression, and isolation.
Zindagi Tamasha is the story of a man who wanted to express himself, and the price he paid for it,
it is rather unfortunate that that has also become the story of Sarmad Khoosat.
Please support this movie however you can, Sarmad Khoosat's love for Cinema, and his desire to share his work with the world despite however many times the world tries pulling him down.
deserves nothing but love, admiration and respect.
You can watch the movie on the Khoosat Films YouTube channel.

What happened to Shireen Mazari is a tragedy but other PTI folks jumping ship should come as no surprise to anyone.
Imran Khan abandoned all the ideology driven workers of PTI and relied on the Establishment giving him electables to become PM.
This was always going to happen.🧵
Founding member of PTI Akbar S. Babar was sidelined by Imran Khan after he raised questions about the foreign funding the party was receiving and corruption within PTI.
Retired Justice Wajihuddin Ahmad was made to resign from PTI because he raised questions on PTI's funding.
Justice Wajihuddin said PTI was taken over by a Mafia.
In 2016, 8 senior leaders, including 4 founding members of PTI wanted to remove Imran Khan as chairman but they were all sidelined.
President of PTI, Javed Hashmi, was removed for raising questions about the role of E.
Why is the media not standing up against state fascism?
PTI and the Establishment curbed all dissent on the media and tried their best to destroy institutions like Dawn and Geo.
Dawn is also now not as brave as they used to be because of how much they suffered.
If an independent media was allowed to operate, dissent and criticism was encouraged, channel owners were not put in prison on trumped up charges, there would have been media in Pakistan capable of standing up to the state fascism, that would have helped PTI today.
The same is true for social movements. During PTIs tenure, women journalists and activists were targeted and maligned. The Aurat March faced massive resistance from the state. PTM leaders were jailed, murdered and arrested, PTI defending the state for all these actions.
Let me tell you a story, a story of Pakistan, a story being written by some, a story where Justice Umar Ata Bandial should be lauded for standing up against the Establishent g for the rights of a Civilian Prime Minister and refusing to be a paid stooge of the Army.
A story where the courts are standing up for the sanctity of the courts - how can a cilivian politician be arrested from the premises of the courts? How can he be manhandled by the paramilitary forces? No Pakistani court or judge would ever watch this happen on their premises!
Can you ever imagine in a country like Pakistan a politician being arrested by the Rangers from the courts and the public staying silent for it?
Civilians have been tortured for too long in Pakistan, the masses would never stand for such a travesty of Justice.
Nothing I'd like more than the role of the Establishment to finish in Pakistan. Pakistan's fundamental problem is military intervention in politics but the cold hard truth of the matter is that PTI got played last night. This is what happens when you put novices/bhanjas in charge
Military buildings with little strategic importance were left open for mobs to attack.
If I got screenshots of PTI whatsapp groups, do you think the military didn't know their plans?
They knew what they were going to do, and who was leading them, they let them do it.
Asad Umar is wrong to say it wasn't PTI supporters - it was - the kids in the party who were emotional led it and the older saner voices were ignored, this is why they all distanced themselves from what happened yesterday because they knew what would happen today.
