Irrelevant. WOW. “This team built its brand on winning.” Yes.That gives you the obligation to demand payment in accordance w/your worth. Which was their central “stance.” But that’s not what you mean is it?Since you were a professional American athlete, let me try to educate you.
If by “stance” you mean support for LGBTQ rights, let’s go there. Their captain is gay. We may not have long for it, but in 2015 the US Supreme Court upheld the right of gay ppl to marry on the grounds that Constitution entitles them to “equal dignity before the law.”
Even today, THAT is the law of the land. The USWNT support for a world that recognizes the dignity of its captain & other members of the team AND MUCH OF ITS FAN BASE is not some fringe position. It is in keeping with the law of the land as affirned by the SCOTUS.
But that’s maybe not what you mean. It’s perhaps “taking a knee” & supporting the dignity if Black ppl to be protected from arbitrary discrimination and murder by officers of the state? Well I agree its been controversial which is precisely when those w/a platform must speak.
Alexei, the USWNT have acted in a tradition of great athletes including Muhammad Ali - who took a controversial stance but also won & lost fights. Of Jackie Robinson who spoke out, and who won and lost championships. Of Arthur Ashe who stood up, but also won and lost.
They joined great athletes like Lebron James, Michael Jordan, the WNBA and many others in standing up for the right of Black ppl to be first class citizens in our country. These are not positions you take b/c you expect only to win championships. You take them out of respect &
solidarity with fellow athletes and your fans. They lost after a run of winning. That is sports! You should know that. Irrelevance? The most “irrelevant” team in American professional sports is the USMNT. They have no tradition of winning the World Cup.
They’ve even become spotty on even qualifying. They have gone backwards from their terrific momentum in the 90s and early aughts. They are often embarrassing in lack of speed & failure to master master the fundamentals of the game at the highest level (crisp, accurate passing).
They are plagued by mismanagement, incompetent leadership and nepotism. For all this they were paid more than the women. They have had and have no bigger booster than you, Alexei. You have championed the “American style of play” (??) which is a losing style.
You have never suggested that they face irrelevance, even though they are. Their brand is mediocrity and you and your broadcasting colleagues fight to keep them relevant with nationalistic fervor. That’s what it’s all about I guess. Being a fan. Loving your team no matter what.
In my view you & your colleagues have done a disservice to the USMNT by not creating an atmosphere in which they would be pressed to improce. But I digress. The USWNT could only face irrelevance if they are held to a different & manufactured standard than that imposed on male
athletes. They lost one championship this year. They will win again. Their brand and tradition is winning. They added aomething else to their brand - courage and integrity. We expect it of them. That’s why their role models. They will tend to both aspects of their brand.
Finally, the Supreme Court said in the marriage equality case in 2015 said “it is the nature of injustice that we may not always see it in our own times.” Many athletes have played a vital role in helping us see injustice. They are among the pantheon of athletes
we respect and revere the most. For the USWNT, after giving us years of exciting play, then a tough loss, after being targeted by the thrice indicted & twice impeached fmr President to his tens of millions of fans, the least they could expect is support from fellow athletes…..
and a measure of grace from commentators who have offered unconditional support to their (perpetually losing) male counterparts whose best W. performance was in 1930. You are not just “making observations.” You are influencing viewers to judge the USWNT by a different measure.

THREAD. And so it continues. Suppress the full truth about a racial program for nearly 100 years, then deny the ability of survivors to demand accountability & recovery. What a blow for these survivors & for this community. Again.
There are many ways to suppress history. Book bans & censorship, of course. But this too. Lawyers have for 20 years attempted to litigate on behalf of survivors. They have been met w/every possible basis for dismissal. As the years go by, & survivors age.
In short, Black ppl in Tulsa are being told this a wrong for which there is no recourse. A moral crime & a civil wrong for which there can be no accountability. This is what corrodes our country from within.
Standing outside the Supreme Court after the announcement of the Shelby County v. Holder decision, which destroyed the most consequential protection in the Voting Rights Act - Section 5 preclearance. I said then that this ruling was catastrophic. I was not wrong. But even then….
…even then I did not predict how removing the protections for Black, Latino, Asian American & Native American voters in those places that had been covered by Section 5, would encourage Republicans to turn voter suppression into part of its national policy.
I did not then predict that the most bipartisan civil rights statute in our history would be shunned by the Republicans in Congress - denied a hearing, denied debate. That every entreaty of Rep. John Lewis, even as he battled death would be ignored.
A THREAD. This woman was born in 1972. Two years later the President of the United States was compelled to resign from office after revelations about his abuse of power and corruption. His VP resigned b/c of unrelated illegal conduct.
In the year she was born, white supremacists burned the Springfiekd Baptist Church in Greenville, SC, the site of many civil rights meetings and gatherings.
In 1979 when NikkiHaley was 7, the poverty rate in South Carolina was 20%. Yes, 20%! The U.S. poverty rate that year was 11.6%.
On Justice Alito’s “response” to the ProPublica piece. Whatever one might say abt its merits, Alito’s piece could work as a decision denying a motion to recuse. That’s why we need full financial disclosure. So that recusal motions/challenges can be made BEFORE THE CASE IS HEARD.
This should be happening in real time in the litigation. Not years later w/a Justice framing it as a fight w/a media outlet. The process of disclosure & recusal should ferret this all out. Why would responsible justices resist this? B/c they don’t want us to know. Not acceptable.
This has to be cleaned up. And the Chief should welcome the opportunity to do it voluntarily. But it has to be done. Glad to see the Senate prepared to act.
Important read. Besides the depressingly slow pace & early timidity at DOJ in investigating coordination at the top, I’m struck by several issues confirmed here as particularly important for how we go forward:
-First, we should not underestimate how the slow pace of confirmations delays urgently-needed departmental action
-Second, as I and others recognized, the public hearings of the House @January6thCmte were critical to spurring (shaming?) DOJ to speed up investigation at the top;
-Third, the reporting of @maddow on the fake electors scheme also played a role in speeding up DOJ action.
-Fourth, we’ve lost a great deal of time, but it’s clear there’s direction & momentum now. That Trump is a candidate shld underscore the urgency, not justify suspending it.
Utterly irresponsible and ignorant. Another super wealthy guy uninterested in facts, reading, or accuracy. Genius. 1) Biden did not “arrest” anyone. A soecial counsel appted by the AG made the charges…
2) What are “the crimes” which you claim are the same Trump & Biden. Trump is charged with “willful retention of Natl Defense Info; Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice; Corruptly Concealing Docs; Scheming to Conceal; Making False Statements & Representations.
For a year DOJ sought the return of these docs. Trump is alleged to have lied about them & moved them multiple tomes to avoid detection by federal agents. There is NO evidence that Pres Biden has engaged in similar acts. Your charge is baseless & irresponsible.
