i disagree with claiming that gender dysphoria doesn’t exist, but coming back to this, she wasn’t entirely wrong…
i don’t believe trans people would experience anywhere near as much psychological distress if not for how we’re treated and what we’re taught about gender variance
i started thinking about this thread as i was reading a paper on kathoey identity in thailand. one thing that stood out to me is the difference in how gender variance is perceived in thai society, and how that’s impacted the way kathoeys conceptualize their existence
they’re not seen as disordered in informal thai society, they don’t consider themselves disordered, and although kathoey have a deep conviction that they were born in the wrong body and don’t identify as male, they’ll attribute most of their mental suffering to poor treatment
trans women face structural social exclusion & oversexualization which results in high poverty rates and limited access to employment, education, and housing. these circumstances often end up pushing them into prostitution
1/15
the rate at which trans women participate in prostitution varies by region, but it remains consistent that this demographic is overrepresented in the sex trade with engagement ranging from 19% to 80%+
being young and racialized makes trans women especially vulnerable
2/15
the united states :
according to the usts [1], 19% have reported engaging in some sort of sex work for food, money, or housing
- 12% of trans women overall have done income based sex work, with rates ranging from 28%-42% for black & indigenous trans women
