i disagree with claiming that gender dysphoria doesn’t exist, but coming back to this, she wasn’t entirely wrong…

i don’t believe trans people would experience anywhere near as much psychological distress if not for how we’re treated and what we’re taught about gender variance

i started thinking about this thread as i was reading a paper on kathoey identity in thailand. one thing that stood out to me is the difference in how gender variance is perceived in thai society, and how that’s impacted the way kathoeys conceptualize their existence

trans women face structural social exclusion & oversexualization which results in high poverty rates and limited access to employment, education, and housing. these circumstances often end up pushing them into prostitution

being young and racialized makes trans women especially vulnerable
