THREAD Pope Benedict addressed Russian Catholic youth in his video message and promoted worst Russian tyrants plus imperialistic chauvinist narratives. Let me explain it in details in this thread. First, let us look at the message published at official Catholic Church page: /1 Image
What did Pope literally said? "Never forget your heritage. You are heirs of great Russia: great Russia of the saints, of the rulers, large Russia of Peter I, of Catherine II, of that empire - great, enlighten, (of) big culture and big humanity. Never reject that heritage... /2
... You are heirs of great Mother Russia. Go forward with it. And thank you. Thank you for your way to exist, for your way to be Russian". Wow. In this paragraph the Pope used the word "great" three times, mentioned two absolute monarchs, in context of enlargement of empire. /3
"Empire, great, great, Peter I, heirs, Catherine II, great, go forward" - this could easily be a warmongering speech of Vladimir Putin himself. Indeed - Peter I and Catherine II are Putins' two favorite monarchs. It is clear why: because they were crazy henchmen and aggressors /4 Image
Peter came to power after he imprisoned his elder sister Sofya and executed the whole Kremlin guard regiment (Streltsi). Peter personally tortured them, what shocked Russians until the XIX cent. (here: 'Morning of Streltsi execution' painting): he was a barbarian even for them /5
Image
Image
Peter's paranoia guided him all his life long. He arrested his own and only son Alexiy, accused him for treason, personally tortured him and let him be executed. Another inspiration for Russian artists (here: "Nikolai Ge, Peter I and prince Alexiy"). But that is not all. /6 Image
Leo Tolstoy, a Russian literature's icon, described Peter I in his political pamphlet "Nicolai the Punisher" (on emperor Nicolas I) that way:

"From Peter I, we see especially striking and especially close and understandable to us horrors of Russian history... /9
...A raging, drunken, syphilitic beast, for 25 years, devastates people, executes, burns, buries alive in the ground, imprisons his wife, debauches... Himself, for amusement, beheads, blasphemes, rides with a semblance of a cross made from pipes in the shape of genital organs /10
and a semblance of the Gospels — a box with vodka. He crowns himself and his lover, devastates Russia and executes his son. Not only do they not understand his atrocities, but they still don't stop praising the virtues of this monster, and there's no end to monuments for him. /11
...And all the horrors, executions, torture, murder of the rightful heir, the enserfment of half of Russia, wars, the debauchery and devastation of the people, everything is forgotten and still praised as some kind of grandeur, wisdom, almost moral height of this bad man." /12
Well, it was quite an inspiration for both Putin and Pope Benedict. But what about Catherine II? Oh, she is a good match to Peter I. She was a murderer, usurper and authored the the most cruel slavery laws for Russia (and Angela Merkel had her portrait on her working table). /13
Catherine came to power after she has killed her husband, Peter III. She usurped the throne and was seen by aristocracy as an illegitimate ruler. That's why she has done everything to please the aristocracy. She has wiped out any right of serves they had in the serfdom system /14 Image
Under Cathrine, millions of serfs lost any rights, were degraded to objects equal to cattle or tools. Aristocracy got right to rape girls, kill babies, torture ppl etc. Any attempt of serfs to call for justice was criminalised under Cathrine: you complain - you go to Siberia. /15
Here is a typical classified from a newspaper 1800: "Three nice-looking girls in age of 14 and 15 for sale. They are skilled in craftsmanship, and one plays gusly (a string instrument). Ask for price under Arbatska chart 1 appt 1117". A painting: convoying slaves to a market" /16
Image
Image
Once again: Catharina II the Great deliberately transformed serfdom into full-scale slavery, where kids could got raped, killed, or sold out of the families. In a partly anti-slavery play 'Woe from Wit' (1824) a protagonist describes slaves being exchanged for hunting dogs. /17

Navalny calls his supporters to actively participate in “elections in 40 regions of Russia” this September. Needless to say, ‘elections’ will take place in 36 regions, other four are Ukrainian regions Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. But this is not all. /1 Image
Navalny urges to vote “for any party except of United Russia”. This is his “smart voting” strategy he pushes since years. In 2021, this strategy gave votes to Communists and “Just Russia” who immediately voted for war and genocide. It looks, Navalny wants to support them again.
Navalny’s “smart voting” made Communists the second-large and influential party in Russian ‘parliament’. They immediately supported “war on Ukrainian Nazis”. He never learns - or this part is not important for him (or those who run his account). Image

I remember I made a report on this Russian lie at a conference in Pristina in 2012. Now the Russians re-use the same lie pattern against Ukrainians. This lie is in its basics identical to centuries-old antisemitic lie about kids killed for their blood. Nothing new, nothing good.
Looking at propaganda system, accusation of enemy of cannibalism is a typical war propaganda pattern. The goal here is to maximally de-humanize the opponent, to smear them with worst thinkable crimes. In „they dismantle prisoners for transplants“ accusation… /2
…the old accusation „they are cannibals“ gets seasoned with a fear to become a victim of cold-blooded technology. It also plays with a subconscious fear to be killed because of one‘s health (an opposite to an „expectable“ death of ill or weak ones). Therefore, Russia‘s… /3

THREAD Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin threatens sovereignty of Poland, questioning Poland's borders and calling the current shape of Poland "a Stalin's gift to (ungrateful) Poles". Why it is extremely important, how it repeats Putin's Ukraine politics, and what does it mean /1
We need to remember that Putin is always very clear about his plans and argumentations. This does not mean he does not lie (he lies constantly), but his goals and steps are obvious. One just needs to be able to read Putin's statements. A half a year before attacking Ukraine... /2
...Putin published his amateur article "On historical unity of the Russians and the Ukrainians" (paying tribute to his hero Stalin, who published articles on philology), claiming Ukraine being a province of Russia, with its lands being "presented" by Russians on own costs. /3 Image

Those who do not follow Ukraine closely, may have no idea that a huge internal conflict is brewing currently. In many regions, the Ukrainians are unhappy with how money is being spent for urbanism projects, culture etc. instead of the army. On the national level, the same fury is… https://t.co/riJQktKDbXtwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

The situation needs to be approached with high differentiation. First, there are needs which must be covered. Some renovations are needed anyway, for many civilians repair works on infrastructure (not only the critical one) is important to stay in the city or to return home. /2
Further, there are spendings bonded to Western financing, this money just cannot be spent for war needs. And of course, some "non-war" spending are needed anyway like social spendings, culture, etc. One just cannot cut all spendings but military production, it is impossible. /3

I disagree. The argumentation "Russia is not the USSR, therefore it cannot collapse" is not persuasive. There can be reasons for Russia not to collapse, but "RU regime is rich + they have market economy" is not the one. Loosing a war is in contrary a realistic reason for collapse
What is more important, just ignoring a scenario which (if occurs) will affect us seriously, is not a good way for any political forecast. I remember positions like “Russia will never attack Ukraine, it is totally unrealistic”. Even if you think it is unrealistic, prepare a plan.
And regarding the economy argument: in 1913, Czarist empire was so solid (relatively), that the Soviets used 1913 as a reference year for their economy propaganda until 1980s. It did not prevent Russia from collapsing in 1917, as they suffered war decline (not even a defeat).
