Today, we’re discussing the all-new Model 3 (Project Highland), timelines for its transition in North America, and settling concerns about the bumper camera.
This thread aims to reassure those with concerns and help answer your questions. Enjoy!
Last week, Tesla officially unveiled the redesigned Model 3 in China, Australia, Japan, the Middle East, and Europe. In the days that followed, customers got to experience the new vehicles in person!
However, unexpectedly, North America was absent from the announcement!
North America, we have some reassuring news for you.
We're pleased to share that Project Highland for North America will be tentatively announced in Q1 of 2024.
Production lines for the redesigned Model 3 are being finalized over the next three weeks at Fremont.
Subject to unexpected delays, validation drives of release candidates begin later this month.
In the weeks following these newer builds, we've been informed that Crash and Safety builds will be prepped and tests performed before the end of October.
We quietly hinted at these timelines months ago when we shared, "Some [employees] say in 1-3 months, some say later this year. Others have said Q1 2024."
Highland's first launch would come three months later, and we expect the same for North America.
As for the reasons for Highland's current absence in North America, we can expect a small handful of changes on the North American version.
Let's tackle the elephant in the room: the mysterious bumper camera scrubbed from all promotional material and the website.
In @carwowuk's "I drive the new Tesla Model 3!" video, Matt clarifies that while the vehicle has the latest autopilot hardware (HW4, based on the upgraded cameras), the car is a pre-production model and that autopilot was not available.
This is a crucial distinction.
Our original thread in June shared that the Model 3 redesign would include HW4 and a bumper camera.
We've also confidently stated that starting with the Cybertruck and Highland, all new redesigns will include bumper cameras for the foreseeable future. 📸
Following recent public discussions with @greentheonly and limited details from our sources, Tesla is still finalizing the hardware and software for bumper cameras.
This is one reason the Cybertruck's bumper camera has only been seen on more recently built prototypes.
While speculative, we believe that Tesla's goal is to still include the bumper camera on all new Model 3s upon delivery; however, in the case of unpredictable roadblocks, its removal from promotional material helps settle expectations.
This is Tesla wanting to be accountable. 👍
With Cybertruck release candidates already including bumper cameras and months until Highland deliveries, we're hopeful that Tesla will accomplish this goal.
Without providing specifics (for undisclosed reasons), last-minute inclusions are very possible.
We want to share a lot more, but you'll have to wait and see how the next few months go!
Moving forward, this will be our last thread regarding Project Highland, as we wish to be mindful of Tesla. As fans, we're excited to see these new vehicles alongside everyone else.
Thank you, as always, for your time reading through this thread. We'll do our best to answer the remaining questions and concerns to the best of our ability.
Thank you to the incredible Tesla Team for crafting such a stunning and futuristic driving experience with Highland. ❤️🚗

Let's have a discussion about @Tesla software update, 2023.12.11! 💬
There needs to be some clarification regarding this update and its relevance to Full Self-Driving (Beta). We aim to provide an easily digestible thread and answer common questions we've seen recently. 🧵
On June 5th, 2023.12.11 was first detected, with only a few vehicles in the United States, Poland, and Germany receiving the update.
At this point, every vehicle owner shared that it was a production build, so we (and others) appropriately labeled it as "not Full Self-Driving."
We then proceed to this week, where to everyone's surprise, Tesla began pushing this update to vehicles on 2023.12.10 (FSD v11.3.6), causing confusion (and panic).
This marks the first time Tesla has pushed the same update to production and actively enrolled FSD vehicles.
Tonight, we'll discuss various topics regarding upcoming Tesla products, software, and vehicle changes. 🚗
Everything expressed below has been shared by Tesla employees, although we must legally note this does not represent the company.… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Next up is the software suite that's been driving everyone, well, quite literally.
Full Self-Driving Beta and the much anticipated V11 update!
The next Full Self-Driving Beta build will be released within the 2023.2 software branch and include a collection of general bug fixes,… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
As of last night, there are over a dozen new EPC listings, although we've only been permitted to share the following:
"1466270-S0-J" "WINDSHIELD GLASS ASSEMBLY - LEFT HAND DRIVE - INFRARRED ACOUSTIC - NO TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY SENSOR"
Introducing: the first appearance of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Beta) in the United Kingdom, running on an internal build of single-stack.
For over a year now, Tesla has been testing their upcoming suite of autonomy features with the help of dozens of primarily secret employees.
Under the role of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Engineer and Test Operator, the company has worked with employees to write and test thousands of specialized builds.
New hires often occurred outside of job listings, as we learned about more recently. 🤐
We've confirmed via stories shared by prior employees, both temporary and longer-term, about the secrecy of this program; even some managers (at local branches) do not have access to vehicle telemetry.
However, after years now, not a single accident nor incident has occurred.
It's official. 🎊 We're releasing V4, our largest update to the service since our launch three years ago.
Dozens of new features, practically every page redesigned and improved, and hundreds of quality-of-life improvements based on months of feedback.
Details below. ⬇️
We will provide a proper breakdown of the major features, additions, and notable changes after the maintenance has concluded, so keep an eye out! 📌
A subsequent update, "V4.2" will be released in mid-January, including additional features requiring more fine-tuning.
⚙️⚠️ We anticipate there will be under an hour of maintenance, primarily due to database updates and migrations. All unexpected maintenance extensions will be communicated here.
A notice will appear up to six hours before the maintenance and provide an exact update window.
We were asked by a small group of Tesla employees to share the following, which is directed at Tesla-related publications and news outlets alike.
Due to issues experienced with Twitrer, we’ll be posting to this thread one tweet at a time. Thank you for your understanding. 🧵
Tesla actively monitors Twitter, Reddit, as well as popular publications to see if and when information that is often deemed as NDA-breaking is shared with the public. This can be videos/photos from inside the factory, service documents, or even early access software leaks.
While this notion has been generally allowed for at least looked the other way) in the past, Tesla has begun actively taking action against employees who engage in this including exclusion from special internal programs, but in many cases, expulsion from the company. Jobs lost.
