Going viral for throwing a tantrum about pronouns in Starfield instead of articulating a cohesive argument for why you find ‘em unnecessary is gunna lead to more studios inserting them into char creators as they begin to feel a need to distance themselves from gamers who lash out
It’s just a fact that temper tantrums often lead to the opposite of what you want, & that viral clip will no doubt cause more devs to insert what triggered him into their games. Partly cause many devs don’t like those types, & also cuz it just makes good/easy PR for them
Anyways, personally I dont much care if pronouns appear in a char creator. Im not opposed to games having more creation options that let people roleplay however they wish. I think id only be annoyed if NPCs & quest givers asked me what mine are, or shared theirs. Which they arent
But regardless of my opinion the point is, youre better off making intelligent arguments & properly voicing why you dislike something than you are screaming into a camera & having a meltdown, esp in todays era where those tantrums are used to paint swaths of people the same color
Be smart and stop giving ammo to people who dislike you. It’s not rocket science.
Anyways, I’m crawling back into my Baldur’s Gate 3 hole now. I have more goblins to kill.
@heelvsbabyface @Spunkpuppet Tweet 2/2:
The internet makes it far too easy to take unsavory moments from an individual & to use em to paint over entire swaths of people. That clip will be used to justify distaste towards those tired of ID politics, & to dismiss them.
I just think good optics are best
@heelvsbabyface @Spunkpuppet I’d also add that screaming doesn’t easily sway new people. It keeps things in a bubble. There’s many folks on the fence tired of this stuff but they’ll now be hesitant to voice concerns or step over the line as it creates discomfort in being associated with the tantrum throwers
@heelvsbabyface @Spunkpuppet In any cultural rift you need numbers, the more ppl on your side the more thing’ll change . We live in a capitalist society, these companies will *eventually* go where the $$ is, so if you wanna win, you need as many wallets as you can get
Good optics/arguments sways more people

Game devs who use political iconography are still allowed to limit modern political discussions within their communities as more often than not such discussions devolve into insane rabidness and fighting
Some people just wanna chill & there's nothing wrong with that. So fuck off
On a similar note, my content on Youtube is quite political, as are my tweets, but within my discord server I rarely engage in polchat, & when I stream I put more emphasis on being goofy & hanging out
It's unhealthy to focus on politics all the time. Escaping it is good for you
Just because you create content with political messaging within it, that doesn't mean you want to be political all the time, and where game devs are concerned, the quickest way to turn a community toxic is to let people argue over politics.
A broken side quest is preventing me from getting four trophies, so I need to wait for a patch to platinum it, but that aside, I hate to say it cuz Im friendly with people on the dev team, but I did not like it. I think it misses the mark in many ways
The enemy variety is exceptionally weak, & for a rich universe full of fantastical creatures, some of things you fight are just stupid. The design for this one statue boss is especially lame
Plot wise it’s okay, but it rarely nails dramatic highs. I felt largely detached from it
The biggest issue with this game though is that it has content on top of content, but the VAST majority of it is uninteresting & frankly just lazy. This honestly is one of the lamest open worlds I’ve touched in quite awhile, like it’s on par, or worse than Ubisoft bloat.
If you strip away the high production values & fancy graphics, what remains is a painfully mediocre experience. One drowning in horrendously tedious level design & overly repetitive combat sequences/enemies
To call the game a slog would be an understatement of Godly proportions, the pacing is an absolute mess & the level design atrocious. Honestly, it's some of the most annoyingly boring/repetitive level design I've seen in a AAA game for some time. Which is really saying something
There are some memorable moments with the story, & the very ending is genuinely touching and heartfelt, but it doesn’t earn its emotional payoffs. Not when half the story is just a dull grind.
It doesn’t help that some cutscenes feel like something you’d see on the CW.
The awards are determined by a voting jury of popular websites, & individual reviewers at those sites dont hold majority power. It’s an agreed upon decision of almost everyone at each site, & as ppl have been open about before, many havent finished the games they vote for
Listen to various podcasts (Easy Allies for ex) & they sometimes discuss the process for how they vote for the awards, usually doing an internal poll of sorts. And most of em dont get early review copies. So a lot of them haven’t finished the games they voted on.
The awards in general are pretty silly & pointless though. I largely just watch for the new game announcements/trailers, which is what it focuses on most. It’s an industry circle jerk with a marketing edge, & the actual awards always play second fiddle to everything else.
Threats of harm cuz of low scores (and a loss of access in a world of access journalism) is why many games get bloated scores they so obviously don’t deserve.
From time to time you can find game bloggers discussing this:
Sony is notorious for removing access (preview event invites, review copies, other forms of early access, etc) from journalists/publications who continually affect their metascores on their biggest budget 1st party games.
Even before Metascore they’d pull access over bad reviews
Critics be giving perfect 10s to Sony games that haven't changed since Uncharted 2
But really, the new GoW sucks. It's a relentless barrage of tedium. There's been more handholdy platforming, scenes riding animals/boats, & dialogue/cutscenes than there has been engaging gameplay
Im blown away by how much dialogue/cutscenes there's been, it's the vast majority of the experience so far, with tons of reskinned boat/elevator/animal riding scenes. It's so utterly slow & plodding, with much of it painfully uninteresting.
And dont get me started on the quips
The puzzles & pacing of the actual levels is a chore too. I swear, if I see one more crane I'm gunna flip my shit. This isn't fun. This isnt challenging. It's just a test of patience, and the game does shit like this a lot
This is one of the most undeserved 10/10s Ive ever seen
