When “progressive” orgs say “we’re just following CDC/public health” as an excuse for why they won’t take Covid precautions, yet loudly preach the need to fight against laws/societal norms for OTHER forms of marginalization?
They’re stating their values on who is expendable.
When organizations that loudly preach the importance of centering marginalized voices and working against the violence of the systems we are a part of say “be reasonable” to people asking for Covid precautions?
They say w/ their whole chest, “YOUR existence asks too much of us”
When orgs that preach 0 tolerance for misogyny, racism, queerphobia, etc say “we need to respect ppl have varying opinions on what risks they’re comfortable with” to excuse minimal/non-exist Covid precautions, they’re saying “YOUR rights are debatable though, a matter of opinion”
When orgs that have hard-line policies against acts of misogyny/racism/queerphobia say “masks are recommended at our event but it’s not reasonable to ask us to REQUIRE masks/enforce that policy ,” they’re saying “stopping violence against YOU is more a suggestion than a rule.”
When they state clear policies against misogyny/racism/queerphobia while ALSO acknowledging those acts of harm still happen so they have policies for how to deal w/ that, but say “if we can’t guarantee we could enforce masks 100% at our event, we just won’t have a mask rule?”
Pay attention to how they show their values. Name ONE other policy in which “some ppl might break this rule & harm other ppl” means “then we just won’t have the rule at all & will frame it as an optional recommendation” rather than “what’s the policy for when that happens?”
How an org deals w/their Covid policies is ALWAYS a reflection of their core values. Covid does not exist in a magic bubble separate from what you’re “really” about.
So when you make your Covid policy, you’re stating what - and WHO - you value.
And what/who you deem expendable

force a refresh
Showed my boys their uncle’s Twitter replies tab tonight.
I figure if you’re tweeting stuff on a public account under your real name, you’re comfortable with anyone/everyone seeing it.
Shouldn’t be a problem, right?
And hey, they even learned a new racial slur they didn’t know before, so now they can call it out if they hear their friends using it on Discord or in-game chats.
So I guess they can’t say their uncle never taught them anything, eh?
Who you are online isn’t somehow separate from who you “really” are.
(Something my boys innately understood w/o me having to say it.)
Don’t let anyone get away with acting like you have ANY responsibility to help them hide their edgelord behavior from your mutuals offline.
PSA that Covid presentation in MANY people (& this was true of some past variants also) is GI symptoms with no coughing, no difficulty breathing, no runny nose, no sore throat. Just GI yucks and in many cases feeling really exhausted and run down.
Feeling weirdly run down and super exhausted both otherwise normal? TEST FOR COVID.
Having GI issues but no other real symptoms except maybe a headache or exhaustion? TEST FOR COVID.
Have minor cold symptoms? TEST FOR COVID.
Because every one of those descriptions is a COMMON presentation of Covid infection
If you’re assuming Covid will always include at least some symptoms like high fever, terrible coughing, flu like body aches, pneumonia, loss of taste/smell, etc - you’re unfortunately misinformed
I didn’t have security called on me last time I was in the ER (with an abnormal EKG, chest pain, and some respiratory distress,) but my nurse did call a psych consult on me to evaluate if I needed to be placed on an involuntary hold. All because I refused to remove my n95.
(I did briefly remove it for a nebulizer treatment because it was extremely necessary, but my nurse was insisting I remove it entirely while there - despite the person who had been next to me in the hall gurneys before a bed opened up being told their Covid test came back +.)
This stuff is happening all over, and with the mask bans happening, nurses like this who bring their personal politics into patient care will be further emboldened to harass and outright harm their patients.
Please stop turning a blind eye. This isn’t “you do you” anymore.
If you live with someone who is currently Covid positive, or have a known exposure to someone who is, please understand that having a (-) rapid test does NOT mean you’re safe to go maskless around everyone - even if no symptoms.
I know WAY too many ppl getting infected this way
This is literally how I was infected last fall by a relative, despite my own strict n95 use at all times. 8 hrs a day for 2 days in a row was too much exposure, & who knows if I had the smallest leak at some point. (This is why one way masking is an unfair ask of high risk folks)
Even if you’ve ditched the masks, the bare ass minimum we should ALL be able to agree on is:
*Masking (& staying home as much as you can) when you live with someone who is currently covid+ or have just been exposed to someone who is covid+
I need you to watch these three clips back to back, all from the last week, because when you hear them all together I don’t know how anyone wouldn’t be EXTREMELY clear about what they are saying.
Went to karaoke in an n95 mask with a sip valve last night (I’ve been in a really dark place again, so we took a risk.)
Man got up in my face *WHILE I WAS SINGING* and started yelling and threatening me so badly the bar ended up having to toss him out AND ban him for life.
If it weren’t for the fact a table of regulars had befriended me earlier in the night and asked me to join them, I’m not sure what would have happened honestly. One of those guys really saved me when things got scary.
I was terrified he was going to pull my mask down.
People on here constantly tell folks like me we are wrong to isolate and need to get out more.
But when I do that in the only way that’s safe for me, I get assaulted because people are that angry at seeing my mask.
