There has been a backlash against AR Rahman @arrahman after the Chennai concert fiasco. While many have attacked him for numerous reasons, one that I am unable to accept is when people say that money is all that matters to him. I have first hand experience of his generosity.
Once when I was collecting money for a lung cancer patient, I asked him if he would like to contribute. I did not know him well. But the man trusted me and with no questions asked, sent me a cheque . He didn't know the caste, colour, creed of the patient. All that he thought of was helping him.
The Sunshine Orchestra is entirely funded by him so that poor kids have a better life. I have interviewed all of them in the early days and, in case you thought he chose them based on religion. No he did not. You can read about the orchestra here: thehindubusinessline.com/news/variety/e…
He paid for their classes and even their food. I don’t know of another musician who has done so much for the community. Now AR Rahman is doing the same in the Northeast with help from the Nagaland government there
Every week food is served in his house for the poor. And it’s not some inferior quality meal—he eats the same food that the poor get. And this has been happening even before Roja and the awards.
Every month cheques go out to those needing help with food, rations, medicines… You won’t hear of them because he stands by the principle that the left hand should not know what the right hand gives.
There are several other instances, and they are too many. Yes, there were several errors during the concert but they did not happen because he wanted to make more money for himself. There are very few people like him around. Don’t take them for granted.
