Julian Alvarez- Striker, Space invader, and maximizing Haaland's gravity.

A thread. Image
Julian Alvarez is an incredible player.

- Ball-striking that's a difference maker.
- Ability to drop deep and add a +1 to build-up.
- Excellent associative play and exploitation of space.
He is a striker. A cold-blooded striker who will bury almost any chance that comes his way. But when Erling Haaland plays for the same club, it's hard to get minutes there.

It's also quite hard, benching a player of his quality, so the best solution? Using him in the pockets. Image
Alvarez does not possess the manipulation or security out wide, and his qualities mean he can excel in the interior zones if used *correctly*.
Many, including myself, have had issues with Alvarez's recent role, but this is down to two simple things:

- Being asked to drop *too* deep- how can you expect a final third influence to take touches deep, and immediately turn to dictate play?

- Not a pure midfielder.
Observe this lovely tweet from @4lex_mcfc. He isn't a ball-heavy player like Phil Foden, a player who constantly demands for the ball, someone who loves having the play go through him. The gestures pointing to the feet, the desire to roam wherever needed.
Please read @4lex_mcfc 's brilliant thread on his strengths and weaknesses.
Phil Foden loves the ball, Alvarez loves space. He is a space 'invader' or as many say, an 'investigator'. His influence largely lies in recognizing space and exploiting it by either releasing runners, or by making runs himself.

A Thomas Muller-type of player. Image
Thomas Muller loves roaming around the final third, but you will rarely see him drop deep in the first phase. Why? Because managers recognise his strengths and weaknesses.
Julian Alvarez must operate close to Haaland, allowed to wander where there is space, and wreak havoc with his intelligence.

Alvarez in the inside positions offers what Gundogan used to- a brilliant understanding of Haaland's runs and movement.
1) Exploiting Haaland's gravity

Here is my thread on 'Gravity' and how Haaland generates it. He commands respect with every movement he makes, every shot he takes. Naturally, he attracts opposition defenders like a magnet.
This makes it harder for him to score, but opens up space for the others to exploit.

Gundogan and Mahrez used Haaland's gravity the best. Be it against a compact block or in transition, the two scored a lot of goals off Haaland's gravity.

Now that they're gone, it is Alvarez who can step up and utilise his strength of exploiting space. He has shown a knack for thriving off Haaland, forming a near 'Big-man, small-man' partnership, reminiscent of the old footballing times. Image
Against a compact mid-block, courtesy of Marco Silva, Alvarez makes a clever blindside run to score, but observe how naturally the centre-backs are gravitating towards Haaland. Creates an extra bit of space that gives Alvarez the chance to take a shot.
This one isn't just Haaland's gravity, as Alvarez also takes advantage of Foden's 'magnet-like' quality. Fixing himself b/w Schar and Botman, Foden drifts to the right, pulling Botman away from Alvarez, and Haaland's presence drags Schar away.
Alvarez knows this and takes a shot.
This is how Alvarez should be used. Providing simple touches in build-up, running into space left by Haaland's box threat.

Marked by Dakhil and Roberts (14&28), Haaland runs into the box, feints, drags #28 out of position, creating a lovely gap for Alvarez to score.

2) Understanding Haaland

Gravity aside, I believe Alvarez understands Haaland's runs. There's almost always a chance Alvarez assists Haaland with a through ball, purely because he understands Haaland's curved runs in behind. Let Alvarez face play, and he can provide this.
Or how about this assist against Fulham? One touch play, simple flick into the box, Thomas Muller like.
Overall, Alvarez is superb in the pockets. View him as a space-heavy player, rather than looking at him as someone who loves having the ball at his feet.

Let him have lesser touches in the deeper phases, give him simple build-up duty, let him interpret the space around zone 14.
He's such an intelligent player in recognising the gaps in the final third. He doesn't need to be the team's creator, but his superb movements off-ball, relentless pressing, and near-precise final third actions (shots, through balls, dribbles) have proven to be decisive in games. Image
Play him in the pockets when Haaland is up front, and let him influence games with his movement off the ball.

Almost Ramdeuter-like, a space marauder, an intelligent presence who can compliment the profiles of Foden and Haaland in different ways. Image
Thanks for reading, likes much appreciated!

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶- '𝗘𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗼'

A thread on Manchester City's potential new signing. Image
Claudio Echeverri is the newest talent to come out of River Plate's Academy- the same one that produced Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez.

He is a classic 10- one who is blessed with the potential to become an elite goalscoring creator.
For starters, like Julian, Echeverri is a fierce presser. Comfortable with sitting as a LM in a 4-4-2, he's also been used to press up front with the striker, usually marking one of the CBs/GK.

He's a tenacious player, capable of using his off-ball work to generate chances.

Manchester City under Pep Guardiola have constantly craved one thing- 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲.

𝗔 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 on how City have achieved these 'central overloads' so far— and a potential solution that could add another layer of depth and unpredictability.🔵🧵 Image
Manchester City's dominance in the middle comes from one simple term- Overloads.

A tactic, wherein, one team has more players in a specific portion of the pitch, and in this case, the central areas. Image
Basically, this creates superiorities, as I've mentioned in previous threads. And that means dominance, suffocation, authority.

For Pep, controlling the middle has always been key, since it ensures complete ability to keep the ball and sustain pressure.

“I think Foden has a free instinct as a football player. He’s not a player that thinks too much when he plays. He doesn’t have to think, ‘Oh what has the manager said to me?’ He’s a bird, flying wherever you want and do it…”
Phil Foden is one of my favourite players in the game. The wide range of tools at his disposal, and the ‘free’ nature of his game, paired with a sense of flair, makes him an incredibly effective and entertaining player to watch. Image

In big games, Man City miss KDB's expansive ball-carrying and missile of a final pass, paired with good decision making.

In light of that, I'd like to explore one thing:

𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀.

A thread! Image
Now, I must say that one solution to fill in KDB's absence is using a combination of Nunes and Foden— the former for his PnP and ball-carrying, and Foden for his final pass and carrying.

However, Jack Grealish can be another solution, as we analyse why we was so good at Villa.
Jack Grealish joined Man City for a fee of 100 million pounds. Big price for someone who was deemed to be 'relatively unproven'

After a rough first season, Grealish took his chances in 2022/23, becoming a regular in what would become a treble-winning team.

𝗝𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗸𝘂: Analysing his dribbling.

What makes the Belgian such a good two-way threat?

A thread. Image
Jeremy Doku's start to life at City has been.. electric. The game against Fulham saw a shy youngster, showing glimpses of what he was capable.

The game against West Ham, however, showed a player who had taken a big jump in progress- dynamism, playmaking, creating.
However, what really caught everyone's was the dribbling- going at Coufal relentlessly, cutting in, moving outside. Many have wondered what's stopped Grealish from doing the same, so I will analyse why Doku is such a fantastic dribbler, capable of going in or dribbling out wide.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City- Combating new set-ups and structures with old ideas.

Ideas that will only add more variety to our attacking play.

A thread. Image
Pep Guardiola's time at City has been all about 'perfecting' his football- inverted FBs (Cancelo, Delph) as an extra passing lane, the use of a technical man as a 9 (Foden, Bernardo) to offer build-up quality, the recent introduction of 'wide duellers' (Ake, Walker) as FBs.

Image

Image
He is always trying to combat football's set-ups- low blocks, wide transitions, congesting central areas.

And now, it seems like the newest 'conundrum', is the rise of man-to-man pressing, or hybrid pressing. The former, especially was used by Arsenal against City very well.
