I had a look at the 'Bharat: The Mother of Democracy' booklet issued during the G20 summit and was quite appalled to see the sophistry, fabrications, and outright lies contained in it. I am sorry to say but this is an assault on intelligence. Some thoughts. #Thread Image
This document opens with PM Modi’s statement in which he says that the country has “the distinction of being named as ‘Mother of Democracy’”. Who named it so? The current regime. Nobody else calls India the “mother of democracy”. If at all there is one, then it is ancient Greece. Image
Such claims come from a position of insecurity. Confident and secure people don’t need to cook up stories, brag or demean others. This is just Hindus-knew-everything version 2.0. Aldous Huxley observed this back in the 1920s! But why is a so-called "decolonial" govt doing it? Image
Let's look at the claims in a bit more detail. Do note the order of words in the line: “In Bharat that is India…” They have altered the order as seen in Article 1 of the Indian Constitution, which says: “India, that is, Bharat shall be a union of states.” Image
The text then says: “Bharat is the official name of the country. It is mentioned in the Constitution as also in the discussions of 1946-48.” This cleverly removes India and implies that Bharat is the only official name of the state.
And while it mentions that there were deliberations on this from 1946-48 (in the Constituent Assembly), it omits what resulted from those deliberations. That the debate was settled after the amendment motion was defeated. India and Bharat both are official names of the country.
The use of the name “Sindhu-Saraswati Civilisation” for the Indus Valley Civilisation/Harappa Civilisation is laughable, to say the least. This was earlier confined to Hindutva circles; now, it is in a govt publication and that is unfortunate.

Ram-Rajya is "the epitome of an ideal government". Mahabharata is an example of democracy. This is laughable, to say the least. Welfare of the people was the responsibility of the king in every kingdom across the globe. What is democratic about it?
Image
Image
“Democracy is about doing things right for the people. This is brought to life in the Mahabharata…” No! Democracy can be broadly defined in a normative and procedural way. You need a set of institutions that together result in a democratic govt. You need proof of such practices. Image
Tangible, observable proof. And power should always rest with the people. What people’s power do we see in the Mahabharata? None! Who looks for democracy in religion or religious literature?
Now, let’s come to the gana-rajya concept that has been cited. The specific example of Lichhavi gana-rajya has been mentioned. But the text doesn’t mention that Lichhavi gana-rajya had a council of 7,707 rajas who were heads of most important families. Image
They chose a raja who was a Kshatriya and the son of the previous chief. This gana-sangha didn’t meet regularly; instead, an elite council of 9 men ruled. Scholars identify the gana-rajyas as oligarchies, not democracies.
The proof of this is rather weak on this one. What the historical evidence suggests is that Gopala was chosen by his feudal chieftains, not his subjects. This blurry thing has been turned into an empirical fact. Image
This is another example of sophistry. It doesn’t tell you that the sabha was composed of land-owning Brahmins only. Anyone who wanted to be “elected” to the sabha had to write their names on palm leaves. The temple priests would then hold a draw of lots thus electing the reps. Image
Brahmins chose other Brahmins. And they lived under an absolute monarch—the Cholan king. Democracy much?
It is hilarious that Krishnadeva Raya and Shahanshah Akbar have been declared as democrats. “Akbar’s democratic thinking was unusual and way ahead of its time”. Really?
Image
Image
This booklet is a sad commentary on the state of affairs under this current govt. But it is an excuse for Mr. Modi’s monarchical style of govt. If you tell the people that absolute monarchs of yore were democrats, you could rule as a Bhagwa Badshah and still call it a democracy.

#Thread 🧵It was Laal Singh Chaddha yesterday; it is Pathaan today; tomorrow, it will be something else. The names will change, but what will not change is the Hindu Right's appetite for boycott campaigns fuelled by hate and bigotry, lies and deception.
Anybody speaking the language of love, empathy, and inclusion will become the target of such campaigns. And every such campaign will be justified in the name of ‘parampara’ and ‘sanskaar; every ‘boycott Bollywood’ trend will be presented as a clarion call to defend the faith.
There will be some who will deny that boycott calls have any impact. Instead, they will claim that a movie does not do well because it lacks merit, acting, good music, etc. Such arguments ignore the seeding of hate on the ground and the use of state power for it.

#Thread Yesterday, I came across a Twitter thread put out by a foot soldier of Hindutva that claims the Mughal fort in Delhi was not built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century but by Anangpal Tomar in the 11th century. It has over 12,600 likes and over 4,800 retweets.
It isn’t original. There are YouTube videos and other right-wing websites made between 2014 and now that make the same claim and cite the same “evidence”. I traced the source of all these claims and found it to be the guru maharaj of Hindutva School of Historical Forgery—PN Oak.
All these claims come from Oak’s book, Delhi’s Red Fort is Hindu Lal Kot. It would take a whole book to debunk this fakery so I wouldn’t even attempt it. But since @sujoyrc sahib suggested that I address the Twitter claim in a thread, let us look at some of the "evidence" cited.

#Thread When we hear BJP leader Diya Kumari's claim about the Taj Mahal standing on her family's ancestral land, we must ask how the Kachhwahas came to be in possession of that plot of premium real estate. Who was Mirza Raja Jai Singh? A top-ranking Mughal mansabdar.
Before their alliance with the Mughals propelled them to greater heights in the 16th century, the Kachhwahas of Amber had a smaller kingdom with much less influence—the top two kingdoms in Rajasthan were Mewar and Marwar.
The Mughal court was based in Agra when the Kachhwahas of Amber became part of it. And they were Emperor Akbar’s favourites. In fact, the emperor was very impressed with their bravery and reportedly said “nihāl khwahim kard” (we shall cherish you) after their first encounter.

These days any effort to point out Subhas Chandra Bose’s dealings with the fascists is being met with reactions like “don't forget he was secular and against the communalists”, “he presented an alternative vision of free India”, “don’t play politics over a national icon”, etc.
Essentially, the message is: don't play a spoilsport in our celebration of a nationalist leader. Let us be clear about a few things. Hindu communalists don’t like Bose because of his secular credentials; they deify him because of his militarism and his nexus with fascist powers.
It is Bose's dictatorial streak and his lack of faith in the idea of liberal democracy that appeals to the Hindu Right. And it is his utility as a ‘what if’ of history is what endears him to the Hindu nationalist parivar — Bose is deployed as a tool to pull down Gandhi and Nehru.

Many good people on Twitter have shared with me their stories of grief and also tried to comfort me. But there is a disturbing trend: the tendency to blame everything on karma, destiny, fate, god. Death in a pandemic isn't natural. It wasn't our destiny to lose our loved ones.
In history we learn that there is nothing "inevitable". You take a step, you make a choice, and that decides how your future is going to be. Your deeds in your "past life" haven't pre-decided things for you in this life. Nor is God interested in making you suffer to prove a point
So, please seek accountability for your loss. Ask questions. Ask why this pandemic was so badly managed that we ended up suffering much more than other countries. Did god really choose Indians to suffer more? Or did millions of Indians did bad karma in their past lives to suffer?

After a while, the Covid tide will ebb. While the country will be left to pick up the pieces, the narrative that will be set by the regime, with a lot of help from its minions in the press and elsewhere, will be a triumphalist one.
They will say that nobody else could have organised the Kumbh Mela at the height of a pandemic other than Mr. Modi. They will say that nobody else had the guts to look the virus in the eye like Mr. Modi.
People will believe all this and celebrate their sheer good fortune of being led by Mr. Modi at that critical hour. Many are still saying that nobody else but Mr. Modi can rescue the country from this mess. That says something, doesn't it?
