I am very excited to share with you that as of September 1, 2023, I have the honor of holding the John J. McKetta Centennial Energy Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.
It is humbling to be selected for the McKetta Energy Chair.
Who was John J. McKetta?
He was a professor of mine when I was an undergraduate & a colleague when I joined the faculty. He was a beloved teacher, excellent administrator, advisor to presidents and executives & always available for students as a mentor.
Thankfully his grand-daughter @ESMcKetta wrote a biography, so we can get more details. He was Ukrainian (I’m 25% Ukrainian). He grew up in a Pennsylvania coal town the son of a coal miner. He worked in the coal mines and decided it wasn’t for him, so he pursued higher education.
@ESMcKetta As she writes, he was a “once-upon-a-time coal miner, trumpet player & mischievous youngest son” of Ukrainian ancestry who bridged academia, government and industry, advising policymakers and teaching students with a singular focus on “using energy well”.
People who know me understand how much this aligns with my life and mission.
He kept his old coal-miner’s cap on his desk as a reminder of the dreary manual labor he escaped: “I compared my life with the coal-mining days and always felt like I was the luckiest teacher alive.”
As as an undergraduate @UTAustin I requested & was granted permission by the president to create & teach a class called “Technology & Society”.
Dr. McKetta gave a guest lecture titled “The Beautiful Future of Man.”
That optimism was infectious and still guides me today.
He was so beloved by generations of students, they raised money to name the Chemical Engineering department at UT Austin in his honor. Here I am flashing a hook ‘em in front of the chemical engineering building.
He was also an alum of @TrineUniversity whose department of chemical and bioprocess engineering is also named in his honor.
McKetta himself endowed a teaching award in honor of his parents at Trine University. My grad school colleague and friend Professor Jon Koch won the award earlier this year.
He himself was a towering figure in academia and the world of energy, but other holders of the Chair were themselves giants in their fields
James R. Fair 1985-1992
Hans Mark, 1992-2014
Clint Dawson, 2014--2023
Michael E. Webber, 2023—present
Hans Mark (the “god of Aerospace”) was my hero and mentor. He fled the nazis & ultimately became the Sec’y of the Air Force, Deputy Director of NASA and Chancellor of the @utsystem
He was my undergraduate thesis advisor and professional champion.
Y'all, it's hot out and @ERCOT_ISO conditions will be tight today.
Critics will be quick to blame wind & solar for the tight grid conditions, but the truth is if we didn’t have 17 GW of wind and solar at peak times today at 6 pm and 10 GW at 8 pm (time of tightest conditions)...
@ERCOT_ISO then we'd be in a world of hurt w/rolling outages and a lot of people sweating it out. It’s hard to imagine we could have built 10 or 17 GW of nuclear, coal or gas in the last few years in place of those renewables, so we owe them our gratitude instead of our criticism. [cont'd]
@ERCOT_ISO The key underlying problems with the grid right now are 1) extremely hot weather that drives up peak demand and 2) horrible energy efficiency standards, which means our demand is even higher than it should have been.
If we want to prepare our grid for a hotter future then...
@Yahoo This weather doesn't look as severe as Feb 2021 &that it's happening at Xmas is good news b/c many factories will be closed, lessening peak demand.
BUT, because the cold front will be so geographically large, mid-continent gas demand (and prices) should surge.
The USA has always had many folks who simply don't believe in majority rule: they believe in minority rule.
The way to say you believe in minority rule w/o saying you don't believe in majority rule is to triumphantly & frequently say "We're a constitutional republic".
But who are the minorities who get to rule?
At first it was just white landowners, then white men, then white women, then non-whites in the 1960s. A lot of what we see today is a backlash to the expansion of democracy to include non-whites.
So there is a concerted push to protect and enhance white minority rule. Can't quite say "white minority rule" out loud so other code words are used for it:
1978: upstart Bill Clements (R) ran vs. Jimmy Carter rather than John Luke Hill (D)
Here's one of his ads👇
@GregAbbott_TX@POTUS@BetoORourke Fun fact: at the time, Bill Clements was the first Republican governor to win in TX since Reconstruction. He subsequently lost in 1982, then came back again and won a second term in 1986. I had dinner with him as a student in the 1990s. Nice guy
@GregAbbott_TX@POTUS@BetoORourke Fun fact #2: Ann Richards succeeded Clements as governor and IIRC during her tenure a state office building (SOB) was named after him.
She and her wicked sense of humor always got a kick out of it that the building's official name was "Bill Clements SOB"
The @ATT internet fiber self installation is bad. I set up @Google fiber at my daughter's condo & the box included obvious simple instructions so we were ready to go w/in 20 minutes. AT&T comes w/o instructions, which is bizarre and the app doesn't do anything. Hmm.
But what's funny is that on the final page there's a weblink to click to get more support...but if you click it the website is empty and says "bad gateway." Nicely done @ATT
@ATT@Google This whole episode reminds me of one of the energy sector's great ironies...
...power plants only work if the power is on...
...for @ATT the internet only works if you already have internet access. The procedure to set up internet access at home requires internet access. Sigh.
Hey #EnergyTwitter I know you share my disgust for woke liberals who want to end our way of life by reducing fossil fuels and use the fake “climate crisis” to make us poor. To help us channel our rage, I collected some statements by members of the woke, liberal movement. A 🧵
Woke liberal President George W. Bush said we’re addicted to oil and pledged to get us off of it.
President George W. Bush was a particularly active woke liberal. Not only did he say we’re addicted to oil, but he promoted hydrogen as a cleaner alternative.
