Russia’s southern defense is multilayered w/ each layer consisting of multiple lines of field fortifications.
Ukraine has penetrated the third & final line of the defensive layer near #Verbove, not the final line in Russia’s total defense in depth on the southern frontline.🧵1/9
2/ The Russian network of field fortifications in Zaporizhia Oblast is a defense in depth spanning 20-30 km deep, depending on the area of the front.
Ukrainian forces have advanced through approximately 8km in the Robotyne - Verbove area since June 2023.
3/ The inflection ISW reported on September 21 is that Ukrainian forces have deployed infantry fighting vehicles beyond a major triune belt of the best-prepared field fortifications on the Robotyne-Verbove line.
4/ This triune military engineering obstacle has three (mostly) contiguous layered components:
5/ ISW’s September 21 report stated that “Ukrainian armored vehicles are operating beyond the final line *of the Russian defensive layer that Ukrainian forces in western Zaporizhia Oblast are currently penetrating.*”
6/ ISW’s report was in reference to the fighting positions – the third and final component of this particular tri-layered military engineering obstacle – not the final field fortification in Russia’s total defense in depth on the southern frontline.
7/ Ukrainian forces can break through the final component of a larger coherent obstacle without breaking through all Russian obstacles in depth.
8/ ISW’s maps have consistently shown the depth of observed Russian field fortifications in southern Ukraine and informed readers likely to understand the context that there are more field fortifications beyond the line that Ukrainian forces are currently penetrating.
9/ UKR forces still have much territory to maneuver through, but the Ukrainian breach of this line is nevertheless very significant.
To reiterate yesterday's report, ISW is “not yet prepared to assess that Ukrainian forces have broken fully through this Russian defensive layer.”

The Ukrainian counteroffensive in western #Zaporizhia Oblast has likely destroyed the Russian 810th Naval Infantry Brigade (Black Sea Fleet). Elements of the brigade have reportedly been operating in the Zaporizhia direction since March 2023 and in w. Zaporizhia since June 2023.
2/ Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Head Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov stated in an interview with @thewarzonewire published on September 22 that the 810th Brigade was “completely defeated” in southern #Ukraine. thedrive.com/the-war-zone/e…
3/ Budanov stated that the 810th Brigade has withdrawn and that Russian airborne (VDV) units replaced them on the front.
NEW: ISW is now prepared to assess that Ukrainian forces have broken through Russian field fortifications west of #Verbove in western #Zaporizhia Oblast. 🧵(1/7)
2/ These fortifications are not the final defensive line in Russia’s defense in depth in western Zaporizhia, but rather a specific series of the best-prepared field fortifications arrayed as part of a near-contiguous belt about 1.7-3.5 km west of #Verbove.
3/ Ukrainian forces have not overcome all of the prepared Russian defensive positions near #Verbove, however, and Ukrainian forces’ rate of advance near their breakthrough remains unclear.
The Russian #BlackSeaFleet is more than its naval assets, and the Ukrainian attacks on the Black Sea Fleet will likely achieve effects beyond the degradation of Russian naval capabilities.🧵 isw.pub/UkrWar092123
2/ Satellite imagery confirms that Ukraine struck the 744th Communications Center of the Command of the Black Sea Fleet in Verkhnosadove (16km northeast of Sevastopol) in occupied Crimea on September 20 as part of an apparent Ukrainian effort to target Black Sea Fleet facilities.
3/ Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted Black Sea Fleet naval assets in and around Crimea in recent weeks, including a strike that destroyed a Ropucha-class landing ship and a Kilo-class submarine and damaged the Sevmorzavod naval repair facility in Sevastopol.
Geolocated footage posted on Sept. 21 indicates that Ukrainian armored vehicles advanced south of the Russian anti-tank ditches and dragon’s teeth obstacles that are part of a tri-layered defense and engaged in limited combat immediately west of #Verbove (18km SE of Orikhiv).🧵
2/ It is unclear if Ukrainian forces retain these positions, however. This is the first observed instance of Ukrainian forces operating armored vehicles beyond the Russian tri-layer defense.
3/ The presence of Ukrainian armored vehicles beyond the final line of the current Russian defensive layer indicates that the Ukrainians have secured their breach of the first two lines of this layer sufficiently to operate vehicles through the breach. isw.pub/UkrWar092123
ISW has observed a significant inflection in western #Zaporizhia Obl:
Ukrainian forces are for the first time confirmed to be operating armored vehicles (Stryker & Marder infantry fighting vehicles) beyond the Russian anti-tank ditch and dragon’s teeth obstacles near #Verbove.🧵
2/ We are not yet prepared to say that Ukraine has broken through this portion of the Russian line since these vehicles have not yet penetrated the last visible prepared defensive positions in the area.
3/ But the ability to bring armored vehicles to and through the most formidable Russian defenses intended to stop them and to operate them near prepared Russian defensive positions is an important sign of progress in the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
The Russian elastic defense requires one echelon of Russian forces to slow a Ukrainian tactical advance while a second echelon of forces rolls back that advance through counterattacking, which requires significant morale & relatively high combat capabilities.🧵 (1/11)
2/ The Russian military appears to rely on relatively elite Russian Airborne (VDV) units and formations for this undertaking, possibly at the expense of heavily degrading these forces. isw.pub/UkrWar091823
3/ Elements of the Russian 22nd and 45th Separate Spetsnaz Brigades appeared to be responsible for counterattacking against significant Ukrainian advances in the Robotyne area during the earlier phases of the counteroffensive and likely suffered heavy losses in these operations.
