At a candidate forum in Franklin, Tennessee, where members of the white supremacist group Tennessee Active Club are here, saying they are providing security for Gabrielle @HansonforMayor. 1/
Brad Lewis, quoted in the article below, told me he is friends with Gabrielle @HansonforMayor and that the Active Club is here because Hanson has received some credible threats. 2/
@HansonforMayor I asked Ms. Hanson whether these are people with whom she should be associating as a candidate for Franklin mayor. She ignored the question. Then a couple of her supporters intervened.
@HansonforMayor So, @MikeBattistelli, are the “Westhaven Voters for Fairness and Civility” ok with this?”
For those just discovering my work, here are a few highlights from my career. As I often tell students, if you pursue your passion, your job will never seem like a chore. (Selected stories to follow) 🧵1/x
This is one of my favorite stories from my Revealed investigation b/c it really captures the culture of Tennessee's Capitol Hill 🧵2/x
And this story also illustrates how truth can become a casualty when one party rules (and it doesn't matter the party) 🧵3/
MUST WATCH: A controversial vote by Republicans to silence Democrat Justin Jones during the legislature's special session has renewed questions about how the GOP supermajority uses its power to stifle debate in the Tennessee House. newschannel5.com/news/newschann…
The bill was to expand a Tennessee law allowing private schools to expand gun carry policies for their campuses. Was Rep. Justin Jones out of order? You be the speaker!
The bill was to allow police to put officers in schools over the objection of local school districts. Was Rep. Justin Jones out of order? You be the speaker!
TENNESSEE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DYSFUNCTION CONTINUES: Despite claims from House Republicans that @GovBillLee now supports 12 bills for special session, Senate GOP leaders say they have not heard from governor, that nothing has changed for them.
@GovBillLee House Majority Leader Jack Johnson and Sen. Paul Bailey tell me the bills being pushed by the House need extended debate, that many of them have unintended consequences that have not been well thought out.
@GovBillLee Just back from interviews, more coming soon.
This is Jeffry Kelton Skaggs. He was 15 months old when he was killed, but the killer got away with it -- until, using the public autopsy report, I was able to raise questions about the investigation. Many years later, we were able to get justice for Kelton. 1/
The mother did not approve of our investigation and, if it had been left to her, we would not have been able to review the autopsy reports. 2/
Almost two decades after Kelton's death - after a new DA was elected -- the mom's former boyfriend was convicted for Kelton's murder. (Again, the story would NOT have happened if it had been up to the mom to release the autopsy report.) 3/ newschannel5.com/news/newschann…
BREAKING: Former Tennessee state Sen. Brian Kelsey was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for his role in illegally steering money to his 2016 congressional campaign.
U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw imposed the sentence following a three-hour hearing that included glowing testimony from family friends vouching for the Shelby County Republican’s character. Kelsey had pushed for probation, while prosecutors argued for a 41-month sentence.
“These actions were serious,” Crenshaw said. “They were deliberate, and they are actions that deserve punishment.”
