This day 3 years ago I gave a talk on the global decay and renewal of #democracy @VicParliament. Wow, it feels like a decade has happened since then, and we see major positive and negative trends:

An impressionistic (non-comprehensive) thread 🧵
In 2019 the dominant narrative was of alarming regression in democratic commitments, with a growing crop of neo-authoritarians, incl #Trump #Orban #Kascynski #Erdogan #Bolsonaro #Modi, and seeming ascendance of #Putin #Xi, spurring explosion of research…
Obviously one of the biggest things to happen since 2019 is #COVID19
- The research tells us that functioning democracies showed resilience, while those already in trouble, and 'hybrid' systems and 'harder' authoritarian states, were hit hardest

🚨🚨🚨 This is scary

#SCOTUS “said it will consider what would be a radical change in the way federal elections are conducted, giving state legislatures sole authority to set the rules for contests even if their actions violated state constitutions

“& resulted in extreme partisan gerrymandering for congressional seats.
“The court will look next term at a case from NC, where Rs want to restore a redistricting map that was drawn by the GOP-led legislature but rejected as a violation of the state constitution by the state’s SC
SCOTUS in March let the NC high court ruling stand for the upcoming fall elections. But 3 of the court’s conservative justices at the time said they were skeptical state courts had a role in refereeing the rules for fed elections, & a 4th said the issue was ripe for consideration

If you live in the blue area of this map, we need you to vote in the Democratic Primary on August 2nd.

We need you to skip the statewide offices, our governor, SOS, and AG candidates are locked in anyway.

We need you to write in JOSEPH ALFONSO for US Congressional District 4. Image
If we fail to get 3,250 voters to do this, there will only be a Republican available on the 4th house district ballot, covering cities like #Kalamazoo, #BattleCreek, #BentonHarbor, #Holland, #Portage, #Saugatuck, #StJoseph, and #SouthHaven. That Republican is absolutely terrible.
Bill Huizenga represents the area of the district in the red square. His old gerrymandered district is in green. He's a no-name candidate in most of the district. He needs an opponent, especially one like Joseph Alfonso who is a Marine #veteran on the state plumbing board. ImageImage

Throughout my time in money-in-politics & democracy advocacy (from @FEC to Colbert to @CampaignLegal), it's become clear to me that too many Americans see our political system as rigged, corrupt, secretive & unaccountable.

This is why we need #FreedomToVoteAct + #JohnLewisVRAA.
I noted in my July 4, 2016 speech to @chq ("A Republic—If You Can Keep It!") that, at the time, 79% of Americans thought gov't is “run by a few big interests looking out for themselves" & 75% believed “corruption is widespread throughout the government”.…
Both Trump & Sanders capitalized on this anger. Having supermajorities of dissatisfied Americans is a real problem for our democracy. But it does not have to be this way! The Senate can pass #FreedomToVoteAct & #JohnLewisVRAA to help make the promise of democracy real for us all.

1/🧵 Tina Descovich is the ringleader of the "#MomsForLiberty" circus. She is a former school board member in #Brevard, and she was defeated by #JenniferJenkins for her seat in 2020. The same Jennifer Jenkins who State Rep Randy Fine is being investigated for threatening.
2/ The "small office" she claims to work out of is also home to many other interesting things, including an org she had with the other founding "mom", Bridget Ziegler, over 2 years ago.
3/ Before she was a school board member, her website says she was a marketing/PR/HR professional who has close ties to the defense industry. With Randy Fine, we can add casinos to that list.

Playing russian roulette with kids' lives during #Covid makes a little more sense now.

19 states have enacted 33 laws that will make it harder for Americans to vote.
We NEED the #FreedomToVoteAct to #SaveDemocracy

I did a THREAD of those laws, State-by-State, with Postcards.
ALABAMA. Banned Curbside voting, shortened time to apply for a mail-in ballot & threatens felony prosecution to local officials who supply ballot without a request
And, Secretary of State & 3 probate judges (who require no formal training) will conduct audit after 2022 election.
Shifted election litigation control from Secretary of State (currently a DEM) to AG (currently GOP).
Another threatens local officials w/ felony for providing mail ballots to voters unless they request.
Also made it harder to stay on PEVL (Permanent Early Voting List)

POLITICIANS CHOOSING VOTERS—Look at this crap… Utah has now cut its biggest city into 4 different congressional districts—for no reason other than to maintain 100% GOP power with 4Republican-0Democrat seats in Congress. Gerrymandering is so corrupt. #gerrymandering
3) When a state is 60% one party and 40% another, you would think district seats would be close to 6-4 ratio. Except it can be 100% blue or it can be 60% red depending on how you cut it. That’s gerrymandering when you cut it in an extreme manner.

State Representative Randy Fine is under criminal investigation for his threats against school board member @JenkinsBrevard. Turn the volume on. 🧵
But there's sooo much more. He was recently named as Vice Chair for Redistricting in Florida. Steve Crisafulli and Make Haridopolis, lobbyists from Brevard, were responsible #gerrymandering the state 10 years ago so that 50% votes = 60-65% of the seats for the GOP. They are pals.
In 2019, Randy Fine's associate, fmr Deputy City Manager for Palm Bay Florida, David Isnardi, whose wife was County Commissioner Kristine Isnardi, was charged with conspiracy, extortion, and racketeering in a public corruption case that involved blackmailing city council members.

Speaker correctly explains that Federal courts have NOT ruled that NC does not have racially polarized voting.

Every 10 years, after the census, voting districts are redrawn as part of reapportionment & the process is called #redistricting.

#Gerrymandering is intentionally drawing voting districts to create an advantage for a political party or group, and disadvantage another.
Each state draws its own congressional voting district lines. North Carolina draws its State Senate and State House districts at the same time.

In NC, the state legislature draws the voting district maps & the governor cannot veto them.
We have voting districts so that people have a representative to look out for the interests of their particular community.

When politicians manipulate voting districts for their own benefit, they are less responsive to voters & it is harder to hold them accountable.

.@CommonCauseNC has analysis of North Carolina proposed draft voting district maps, including maps showing NC’s Black population.

With NC's history of racial #gerrymandering, looking at #redistricting as an equity issue is vital.

Here is the CMT-9 Draft NC Congressional Map, showing the % Black voting age population:…
CBK-3 Draft NC Congressional Map appears to have two of the districts have a Black voting age population (BVAP) of 37% or higher: district 1 (38.87% BVAP) and district 12 (38.01%).

It is 1.5 months till Estonian #LocalElections. Registration of candidates must be completed tomorrow (7th Sept). After that, there will be several days for corrections and withdrawals. Next week we will find out what the final electoral lists and candidate numbers are. #Eesti
Voter lists will be locked in on 17th of September. Voter registration is automatic in #Estonia and it means that anybody who is 16 y/o on election day and whose official address is registered in a given municipality on 17th of September, will be able to vote there.
As electoral system is proportionate with 5% threshold, it can be said that everybody's vote counts equally. Or can it?
