This is a neat visual demonstration that Western reliance upon thermal imagers is becoming obsolescent.

Going multispectral with passive millimeter wave imaging, added to both passive light amplification and thermal sensors, will be required going forward.

Sensor tech🧵
1/
Getting passive MMW imaging at multi kilometer ranges for non-metal objects in ground clutter will take time.

Hence the need for a multispectral approach.

...there was no way to stealth anyone.

I had a really memorable conversation at a conference in the late 1990's with a USAF development pilot when I pointed that out to him.

The panicked look on his face was worth the price of admission.

3/
It underlines the problem that there is a general a failure in senior DoD in understanding how sensors and low observables actually work, and that an enemies first resort is to "switch bands" in order to see targets.

This is something that started in the WW2 U-boat era.

4/
This information is incredibly easy to find with an internet search.

This is a good background on RN radars that were hunting Nazi U-boats.

And this is a 1963 USNI article on American radars executing the same mission against U-boats.

The proliferation of VHF band early warning radars in Russian and China is the modern answer to Stealth in the B-2, F-22 and F-35 is the 21st century equivalent of that WW2 tech battle.

The useful range of 21st Century VHF radars against stealth planes is depressing.

These modern low band radars employ Digital Moving Target Indicator (DMTI) or digital pulse doppler techniques and some types also using Space Time Adaptive Processing (STAP), exploiting...

...the high performance of COTS computing technology, readily available in the open market and easy to ruggedize for a semi-mobile E.W. radar applications.

The huge western investment in crewd stealth jets has made understanding the VHF band switching threat into this meme⬇️

It is nice to have visual confirmation from Ukraine that they are using S-200 5V28 missiles in the ground to ground mode.

Carefully note the 5V28 missile pull up after solid rocket motor burn out.

A short S-200 🧵
1/3
This trajectory plays hob with counter-battery radars trying to predict ballistic trajectories, because the 5V28 isn't flying one.

Ukraine's 'Ersatz ATACMS' boost-glides at mach 3.5 at ~80K feet (~24 km) altitude for its maximum range shots.

2/3
Information on the S-200/5V28 like the above post are really easy to find.

Air Power Australia is the go-to online technical resource for the Russo-Ukrainian War.

I wish more OSINT accounts would make a systematic use of it.

For those who are unfamiliar with HIMARS, the cab of the launcher in the photo below is of one of the early DARPA paid for Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) chassis that I was responsible for accepting at the Sealy Texas TVSLP plant.

1/
This is another view of those early HIMARS launchers.

The cab you see here was only hardened for the rocket blast, not for artillery fragments, bullets and mines.

This is another view of those pilot production HIMARS before cluster munitions became forbidden on the GMLRS rockets (photo left).

These launchers were used in combat at the 2003 Battle of Haditha Dam. (photo right)

This Russian behavior in replacing Elite VDV combat manpower was seen in 2014-2015.⬇️

Unlike the Soviets, who husbanded the Guards formations, and used the trash troops for "myaso" or cannon-fodder human wave attacks, the Putin regime has played the opposite game, with no...

This pattern of Russian behavior in the Russo-Ukraine war is only a surprise to the DC Ukraine haters that make up the Escalation Management faction.🙄

2/

I mean, the data was there for anyone to see if the DC yo-yo's in question ever bothered to pay attention to reality as opposed to their secular religious dogma.🙄

The underperformance of the US DoD in it's core contract administration function upstream from the Defense Contract Management Agency is strictly due to the politics of the executive branch.

I have dealt with three MRAPs professionally: the Force Protection Cougar, the BAE/TVSLP Caiman and the failed Textron Armored Security Vehicle (ASV M1117) variant.

The ASV was an armored vehicle and it failed on cost and production

I've told people about Russian reflexive control infowar over and over, and how it's biggest target was the Russian people.

This thread details how Putinist infowar has used Russian popular culture outlets to dehumane Ukrainians, British & Americans to the Russian people.

1/
This is why you have seen the RuAF playing the Imperial Japanese games at Saipan and Iwo in Zaporozhzhiye.

The Russian suicides to prevent capture, attacks under surrender and the Russian wounded trying to use grenades on AFU soldiers are all the result of decades long

...cultural conditioning that @sumlenny laid out.

The so-called "Realists/Escalation Management"clique controlling Ukraine policy in the Biden Administration simply pretends such loser behavior does not exist in the world.

I'm going to greatly disagree with @nicholadrummond here.

This:

"...are revolutionary only in that they have democratised air power"

...is all about the cost of electric/propeller drone munitions being in the high 100's to low 1,000's of dollars.

Drone revolution🧵
1/
For the $4.15 million price and weight (29,000kg or 63,600lb) of a single M109A7 SP gun, ammo, and crew, you can have several light wheeled vehicles and over a thousand precision FPV munitions reaching up to 20 km, with each of the M109A7 crew being drone operator.
2/ Image
The two orders of magnitude (100 times) increase in the density of indirect fire sensor/shooter complexes on the battlefield means indirect drone firepower will be the dominant firepower.

Rotary wing firepower.
