On my way to the funeral of a young Brazilian woman murdered at the music festival. A message went out urging strangers to attend, because she has barely any family here. There’s a 2km line snaking out of the entrance of the cemetery and I doubt we’ll make it.
The funeral was scheduled for 20min ago. We thought we were early. Still 1.4km just to reach the entrance of the cemetery. Israelis are amazing at responding to calls to attend funerals. Such strong social solidarity here in the absolute darkest of circumstances.
Parked by the side of the highway and we’ll leg it. There’s a whole column of incredible citizens walking down the hard shoulder, past a kilometer of parked cars, to attend the funeral of a total stranger murdered in cold blood.
People have abandoned their cars on the highway and are just legging it, to the funeral of a total stranger because they want to give her family a hug.
All under threat of rockets.
Humanity can be despicably evil, but it can also be wonderful.
The whole country is here.
