🧵Saudi FM in meeting with Blinken earlier today:
It's a disturbing situation. It’s a very difficult situation. And the primary sufferer of this situation are civilians – civilian populations on both sides are being affected. & here it’s important, I think, that we all
condemn the targeting of civilians in any form, at any time, by anyone. And I think that’s something that’s very clear, that’s something that’s clearly adopted by the Arab League.
But that said, the priority now needs to be to stop further civilian suffering. And here,
we need to find a way to quickly de-escalate the situation, to quickly bring back peace, at least stopping the guns, and then working towards addressing also the humanitarian challenges.
So here I have to emphasize that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is very, very difficult,
& we need to work together to make sure that access for humanitarian relief & humanitarian goods is allowed. …
And we need to work together to find a way out of this cycle of violence. This is something that we really, really need to focus on.
Blinken: I would just say first, of course, that no country can or should be expected to tolerate what Israel has just been on the receiving end of, which is an attack that almost defies description & words, in which more than 1,300 of its people were slaughtered along with the
nationals of more than 30 other countries, by Hamas.
Hamas is not representative of the Palestinian people or their legitimate aspirations for the future. Hamas is a terrorist group. Its only agenda is to destroy the state of Israel and to murder Jews. & it’s important that
the entire world see it as such...
At the same time, as Israel pursues its legitimate right to defending its people & to trying to ensure that this never happens again, it is vitally important that all of us look out for civilians. And we’re working together to do exactly that,
in particular working on establishing safe areas in Gaza, working on establishing corridors so that humanitarian assistance can reach people who need it. None of us want to see suffering by civilians on any side, whether it’s in Israel, whether it’s in Gaza, …anywhere else.
& we’re working together to do our best to protect them.
I think at the same time, it’s vitally important..that we work together to make sure that, to the best of our ability, this conflict does not spread to other places & other fronts. And so I look forward to discussing that.

🧵 “It is not enough for intelligence officials to understand ‘them.’ Intelligence must also understand ‘us,’ & how what happens in an agency’s own country can change enemy perceptions and behavior. Israeli intelligence agencies, for example, might not have known whether or how
“their country’s unprecedented domestic political crisis was perceived by its enemies, incl. Hamas. & the crisis may also have helped Hamas’s attack succeed. Israeli PM Netanyahu’s proposed overhaul of Israel’s judiciary roiled Israeli society, leading to massive public protests.
“Hundreds of essential military reservists pledged to refuse to show up for duty if the overhaul passed. Investigators must ask whether this domestic turmoil weakened Israeli deterrence not only by influencing enemy perceptions but also by eroding Israel’s actual intelligence
🧵Sullivan: Iran is complicit in this attack in a broad sense, because they have provided the lion’s share of the funding for the military wing of Hamas. They have provided training, they have provided capabilities, they provided support, & they have had engagement with Hamas
over the years & years. And all of that has played a role in contributing to what we see now. As to the question of whether Iran knew about this attack in advance or helped plan or direct this attack, we do not, as of this moment,...have confirmation of that.
We are talking to our Israeli counterparts on a daily basis about this question. We’re looking back thru intelligence holdings…And if there’s an update to that, I’ll share it with you. But as I stand here today,
while Iran plays this broad role—a sustained, deep and dark role,
Jake Sullivan: Like many of you, we've watched in horror and anguish, the scenes of butchery against innocent civilians at the hands of Hamas terrorists in Israel. & the more we learned, the greater our grief. More than 1000 men, women & children were slaughtered in their homes,
...among them, at least 14 Americans. We mourn for all their lives. And we're actively working with Israelis to determine the whereabouts of the missing, including missing American citizens.
Sullivan: We believe there are 20 or more Americans missing, but that does not mean they are hostages. That is the number who are currently unaccounted for.
heard something interesting about how the story that smeared the Iranian American analysts got shopped to Semafor. Apparently a Trump/Pompeo aide was the one shopping it around for about a month.
@semaforben what is interesting about is the Trump/Pompeo/GOP operatives are behaving like they are “reacting” to the story, but told they were shopping around the story
Told Trump/Pompeo aide Megan Ortagus was shopping the story around for over a month to various outlets. Strange because she purported on Twitter yesterday to be shocked by the story, along with various of her associates apparently involved in propagating the story.
