At night, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out an attack on Berdiansk Airport, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The airport was used by the Russians mainly for helicopter operations. t.me/supernova_plus…
NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System shows multiple fires raging at Berdiansk Airport on 17 October 2023.
According to the Fighterbomber, prominent pro-Russian TG channel, losses in manpower and equipment are severe. t.me/fighter_bomber…
Latest Sentinel sat imagery taken on 15 October 2023 show at least 26 helicopters at Berdiansk Airport.
Russian Air Force helicopters burning after Ukrainian attack on Berdiansk Airport.
There are three separate fires visible in the video. The one on the right is definitely a helicopter as we can see rotor blades among the flames (third photo).
Ok, going from the left. 1st fire is too far to tell anything (possibly a helo). 2nd fire also too far (possibly a helo), we can see parked Ka-52 and Mi-8 (both not on fire). 3rd fire led to multiple explosions, it's an ammo dump or heavily armed helo (maybe Ka-52 or Mi-24VM).
4th fire is a Mi-8. 5th fire also led to multiple explosions, I think ammo dump or heavily armed helo. A Mi-8 parked nearby (green arrow) was likely damaged by the explosions.
6th fire is too far, possibly a helo, but who knows. 7th fire is behind the trees, maybe air defense spot?
I've been staring at this still frame for a while. And now I think that the helicopter next to fire no. 5 looks more like a Mi-28 than a Mi-8.
Thanks to @duke_garland_2 we have Planet Scope imagery taken on 17 October 2023.
These three black spots are interpreted by many as blast marks, but they are most likely the result of excessive post processing. Similar marks in the exact same spots are visible in Sentinel imagery taken on 15 October, so they cannot be the result of the attack.
It seems that five Russian Air Force helicopters were destroyed in the attack.
Higher resolution Planet Labs imagery taken on 18 October 2023.
By comparing Planet Labs imagery taken on 29 September 2023, we can assume with some degree of probability what types of helicopters were lost. Apparently four Mi-8 and five Ka-52 were destroyed in the attack on 17 October 2023.
And of course, one wonders why these four helicopters were not evacuated. As indicated in the comments, they were most likely damaged.

Almost 5 minutes worth of FPV UAV attacks on Russian Air Force aircraft in several different air bases! No time right now, so I only watch it once, will do a thread later. Some new ones damaged! As far as I can see no new destroyed ones.
I will describe all the attacks in the same order as they were edited into the film. I'm not sure if they were edited chronologically. Timestamps in brackets mark the start and end of recording from a single FPV UAV.
Olenya. 1: Tu-95MS RF-94257 destroyed at 68.145251, 33.449846. At least 3 UAVs used (0:02-0:06, 0:06-0:10, 0:24-0:31), first 2 did not detonate or made a little damage, the 3rd struck the right spot. Moment of the explosion was recorded by another UAV flying nearby (0:31-0:36).
Another attacked target is Belaya Air Base, Irkutsk Oblast, Russia.
Two pillars of smoke are rising from the Tu-22M parking area. Likely two Tu-22M bombers were struck, here 52.896441, 103.580821 and possibly here 52.900559, 103.574192 (or in the one of nearby revetments). Maxar satellite imagery taken on 20 September 2024 for better orientation.
A Tu-95 was attacked at 52.916314, 103.564649. I think in the last (4th) photo it is the third pillar of smoke from the right. First two on the right are coming out from the mentioned Tu-22M parking area.
First of all, today's attacks on multiple Russian air bases were carried out by FPV UAVs. The drones where hidden in the ceilings of cargo containers that were transported on the trucks to the vicinity of the targets. This will go down in history.
Let's see how things are going at the Olenya Air Base near Olenegorsk, Murmansk Oblast, Russia.
1: Tu-95 burning at 68.140032, 33.444580. Hard to say whether it was destroyed or damaged. Let's hope for more images. For now I will count it as damaged.
A thread about two Ukrainian Mi-8s shot down on 5 April 2022. The 1st one was returning with wounded from Azovstal when it was downed several km before reaching friendly territory. Major Horoshko and starshyy leytenant Sindiy were KIA, kapitan Chichura is still missing.
There were between 9 and 15 wounded soldiers on board, at least 2 were KIA. The 2nd Mi-8 attempted to rescue the survivors but was also shot down while approaching to land near the crash site of the 1st Mi-8.
The crew of the 2nd Mi-8: polkovnyk Voronyi KIA, kapitan Burlakov POW and the navigator Pylypenko MIA. Four person rescue/fire team from the GUR MO was also on board: kapitan Borovytskyi, serzhant Klepikov and molodshyi serzhant Gavrylenko, all KIA, Dobrovolsky MIA.
