A lot of people are talking today about Michael Flynn's pardon, since @emptywheel asked if Trump's recent disavowal of Sidney Powell was because of a pardon quid pro quo. Just to remind, the quid pro quo is WRITTEN: pardon Flynn for help "base rallying" 1/ emptywheel.net/2023/10/22/don…
Soon after the election, as Stop the Steal efforts were spinning up, Ed Martin sent a series of text messages to speechwriter Vince Haley, suggesting Flynn would promote election denial if pardoned. Nov 7: "Please push Flynn pardon. We need him for the base rallying". 2/
Ed Martin was actually pitching to Newt Gingrich, Haley's old boss, not to Trump. On Nov 10, as the Nov 14 DC rally was approaching, Martin got urgent: "A POTUS pardon Thursday or Friday. He'd come to D.C. for the rally march. Please float it to Newt. We need that guy loosed". 3/
Flynn got no pardon before November 14, and didn't show up in DC, though his brother Joe came. Flynn started helping only after his Nov 25 pardon. On Dec. 12, pardon in hand, he was ubiquitous, speaking at 3 separate rallies: "base rallying." 4/ docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
It seems clear that Flynn agreed to help promote election denial in exchange for a pardon. It is a harder question whether his help went beyond speeches. On Dec. 18 he floated a plan that was rejected. On Jan 6 he sat in the audience at the Ellipse even while the attack began. 5/
There is no clear connection between Flynn and the violence at the Capitol. Someone had to organize, but there are other candidates too for that. (Those pros and cons require a longer thread.) But it's very clear that Flynn cut a deal for at minimum delivering speeches. 6/
The hottest take from the Flynn pardon story is that Ed Martin thought the best way to get him one was to ask Newt Gingrich. Newt was seen as the pardon broker!
The Vince Haley texts are at link below, & here's their context in the Big Timeline. 7/ govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GP…
Flynn's deal on the pardon was widely assumed. Annie Howell, a relatively minor helper with election fraud claims, says that Flynn "was kind of absent..until he received that pardon.. and then he had a heavy influence..after that". Quid pro quo. 8/ govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GP…
Here's Trump's post that set off all the discussion: "MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY... she would have been conflicted. Ms. Powell did a valiant job of representing...General Michael Flynn...an innocent man...like many other innocent people who are now being persecuted..." 9/
If anyone wonders who Ed Martin is, who pitched Flynn's pardon: he's head of Phyllis Schlafly Eagles and an "old friend" of Speaker candidate Pete Sessions. The day before the Capitol attack, Martin & Sessions posed together with a Stop the Steal sign. Jan 6 is not over. 10/

The dam is breaking today - the House holds against Jim Jordan and Kenneth Chesebro takes plea deal. To remind: Chesebro links the legal schemes and the violent action at the Capitol on Jan 6. The Capitol attack was organized and Chesebro knew it. His testimony will show it. 1/
Cannot emphasize how big Chesebro's news is. There will be revelations that are shocking. People planning coups don't leave things to chance - the crowd was managed. After Chesebro testifies, the security community will have some self-reflection to do. 2/
Kenneth Chesebro followed Alex Jones around the Capitol all day on Jan 6. Last week Fani Will subpoena'd Jones. Yesterday Sidney Powell flipped. Today Chesebro folded. I'll take bets this cap lift Chesebro made was meaningful. DM and we'll set it up. 3/
It's always the same people: Mark Meadows, Trump's Chief of Staff, deeply tied to Jan 6, just gave an award to Sen. Tommy Tuberville for blocking military promotions. Tuberville is one of only 3 Senators with deep Jan 6 involvement, and the only one Trump called mid-attack. 1/
Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan founded the House Freedom Caucus together in 2015, in part to tear down the current House Speaker - deja vu. In 2020, Meadows was named Trump's Chief of Staff to shore up support from the religious right. Now he's at CPI. 2/ meidastouch.com/news/right-win…
Mark Meadows is from the religious right, but in 2022 he signed the "principles" of Peter Thiel's NatCon group (which include: no pro-democracy foreign policy). Other J6ers signed too, including Julie Kelly (Epoch Times) & Charlie Kirk (TPUSA) who processed the J6 rally funds. 2/
This, from @DavidCornDC 👇. Every time you interview a Rep who was involved in Jan 6, ask them about what they did. Every time. Ask them about the meetings with Trump, the phone calls, the plans. That's what your readers want to hear. It's a small group - memorize them. 1/
I made a scorecard but if you don't like it, make your own. Weight it differently, add more of the letters and press releases - the names won't change much. Just handful of Congressmen and three Senators did the damage. Ask them about what they did. 2/
Mealy-mouthed bland both-sides-ism isn't working for anyone. Not the readers, not the industry. People don't want gossip about popularity contests. They want to know what happened. So try something different - push for the truth. 3/ apnews.com/article/washin…
PLEASE - if you're printing comments on today's politics from someone who tried to overturn the electoral vote on Jan 6, ALSO mention what they did. Newt Gingrich advised Trump on election schemes. His ex-staffers helped write both Trump's J6 speech and a key election lawsuit. 1/
Vince Haley, a key player in Trump's speechwriting office, worked for Newt Gingrich for over 12 years before joining Trump. He still used "vince@newt.com" as his email. Days after the election, he passed ideas from Newt to Trump, helped sketch a "state legislature option". 2/
On Jan 7, Vince Haley said "throw cold water on any concession talk" and that he'd consult with "Newt and Randy". On Nov. 8, Haley angles for Trump to meet with Randy Evans - Newt Gingrich's "political lawyer", a "wartime consigliere who thinks the election is being stolen". 3/
As the House gears up to choose a Speaker, many people don't see how fateful this choice is for democracy. Jim Jordan, the nominee, is one of a handful of lawmakers who ACTIVELY tried to overthrow the US government. To show that I made quantitative scores. Here's Jordan. 🧵 1/
Jordan's role is clear in the J6C transcripts, but simple metrics also show the same picture. This chart scores lawmakers on 11 actions leading up to January 6: votes, statements, subpoenas, etc. The results confirm: the treason was led by just a few. 2/ docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
Maybe this chart won't work for people like @LisaDNews of PBS, who doesn't even understand people tried to overthrow the government. For everyone else, it can help clarify the main actors. Yes, many lawmakers voted against certification. Focus on few who led - like Jim Jordan. 3/
As Austin Scott enters the race for House Speaker, his insurrection score: on Dec. 10, Scott DID sign the amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to reject the votes of swing states (L). But on Jan 6, Scott DID NOT object to electoral votes (R). So: better than Scalise or Jordan.
Here's a site that does the same checking. They rate his support for democracy as poor. But, Scott is the first candidate who clears at least the MINIMUM threshold for a House Speaker who could possibly be trusted with that position. 2/ accountability.gop/profile/rep-au…
Rep. Austin Scott is not in the pro-Putin caucus - reliably supports aid for Ukraine. Again, that's a minimum threshold, not overturning democracy or selling out to a foreign power. But better than Scalise or Jordan. (h/t @SarahLongwell25) 3/ gopforukraine.com/legislator/aus…
