THE RULE OF LAW AND THE CREDIBILITY OF LEADERSHIP

Still on the identity crisis and controversies that have continued to haunt the Nigerian citadel of power since the February 25, 2023 presidential elections.

There is this saying: "IT IS NOT TITLES THAT HONOUR MEN, BUT MEN THAT HONOUR TITLES."

The lofty titles that decorate people in power have little meaning if there is a hollowness and falsehood underneath them. Such titles which adorn those in public office mean nothing if they
are not original and are fake if those who bear them have no honour to support the weight of the titles they carry. In situations where there is public doubt as to the veracity and authenticity of these titles and the claims behind them, it is the judiciary's role,
when called upon, to uphold the honour of the titles through transparent rulings. Only through such judicial interventions can the public be protected from the tyranny of dubious and duplicitous characters and identity fraudsters.
In such situations, the judiciary has a bounding duty to protect society's value system. This is one of the obligations of an impartial judiciary in a democracy. The rule of law remains the lifeblood of democracy in all societies and by whatever definition across time.
It remains the foundation for all our fundamental rights as humans. It is the rule of law that binds society together. The expectation by the high and low alike that their rights will be protected and respected by fair judges in transparent courts is what keeps citizens'
loyalty and belief in democracy. People, irrespective of their station in life, approach the courts whenever they feel their rights are assailed in the expectation that fair courts will render justice to them according to law.
However, when the fairness of the judiciary is not assured, and the transparency of judiciary operatives is uncertain, the rule of law will come under severe threat. Once ordinary people lose faith in the fairness of the judiciary, the rule of law is threatened.
With it, faith in democracy comes under threat as well. A society is endangered when the rule of the powerful and the rule of the rich and the mighty replaces the rule of law. When that happens, justice becomes a commodity to be traded between the rich and powerful and a cult of
corrupt judiciary operatives. When a democracy is based on faulty justice, it opens society to apparent dangers. Governments become subject to impunity and casual violations of the rights of ordinary citizens. The rich and powerful can trample on the rights of the lowly,
as there are no consequences for infractions or lawless acts. This can be the groundwork for a democracy to graduate into an autocracy.
US President Joe Biden could not be more apt when he said, "For any young democracy, the most difficult but important step is burying the legacy of tyranny and establishing an economy and a government and institutions that abide by the rule of law." -PO

I read an intriguing story of a nine-year-old Nigerian boy, David Balogun, living in Pennsylvania, United States of America, who made history by becoming one of the youngest students in the world to graduate from high school.
The young Balogun is said to have become the youngest student to graduate from Reach Cyber Charter School, based in Pennsylvania, and is now taking classes at Bucks County Community College. The young boy hopes to go into astronomy, engineering, or software development in the
future. David's story reinforces the need for a nation to have the right set of ethical and responsible leaders, committed to building strong national institutions and making the right investments in the critical areas of development: education, healthcare and lifting people

Over the weekend, I took out time to interact and share moments with some Nigerian youths and technopreneurs at an event tagged SM Fest, an annual international business conference, in Owerri, Imo state Capital.

I shared with them some critical roles of leadership that I have chosen to play in whatever capacity I find myself. As part of my leadership commitment, I have decided to invest ample time in mentoring the younger generation as they are indisputably the future of the nation.
I started by introducing myself, availing them of my bio-data, and showing how I acquired my basic education, which I have consistently maintained, is necessary. I shared my life lessons as a trader, with its attendant challenges and successes.

Having followed the prolonged identity crisis that recently played out in the American Court System and the controversy surrounding the authenticity of the Chicago State University credentials of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I must confess that I am distressed as a Nigerian.
In addition to the barrage of media frenzy that the matter has triggered at home and abroad, I have had the unwholesome burden of responding to embarrassing questions about Nigeria’s overall credibility as a nation to privileged audiences and individuals both at home and

As we mark 63 years of our nationhood, I wish to encourage Nigerians not to despair over the agonizing situation in the country, but to remain resolute and hopeful that a new Nigeria is still POssible.
Unfortunately, at 63, Nigeria is still faced with so many sad realities that continue to keep the nation on the path of retrogression. It's also saddening that there is hardly any sector of our national existence that commands celebration 63 years after Independence.
The challenges we face today as a nation are occasioned by the successive failure of leadership. Notwithstanding the grave uncertainties and hardships the people are experiencing, the situation is still not hopeless.

Yesterday, 29th September, I was at Princeton University, the No 1 University in USA, (US-News), as Keynote Speaker at Chinua Achebe International Symposium and 40th anniversary of his booklet "The Trouble with Nigeria"
I elucidated to the audience how cumulative bad leadership, over the years, has done great harm to the Nigerian nation, using the periods 1980-1983 and 2020-2023 to illustrate. Our Political Leaders have turned Governance into a gigantic criminal enterprise, and wickedly
plundered our commonwealth, which made our country to become among the very few Nations in world developing backwards. The world is about to exit fossil fuel, and yet we cannot point to sustainable investment or savings from the trillions of petro-dollars we have earned since

As a Guest Speaker at one of the events, I spoke on "SME Formalisation and Internationalisation in the Commonwealth: Empowering Growth and Global Reach." I visited Bangladesh in mid-2009, about 6 months after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assumed office.
At that time, the country's Human Development Index was within the low category. Her GDP was $102 billion, with a GDP per capita of $688. Unemployment was around 10-12%. You could see and feel the poverty and poor infrastructure.
