“So many people speed on my street. We need a speed hump.”
But there are actually better ways to slow down traffic!
For hump day 🫣, a better-than-a-speed-hump 🧵...
What’s wrong with speed humps?
Nothing really. Speed humps are…fine.
But they’re not the most effective intervention, can’t be installed on bus routes, and don’t reclaim any space from vehicles.
What’s better than a speed hump?
See below!
These deliver serious safety dividends, can be installed on most streets, and by reclaiming space from vehicles, make space for trees, bike parking, benches, wider sidewalks, and more.
⬇️⬇️⬇️
First, chicanes!
These are alternating extended curbs installed mid-block to turn a straight street into an S-shaped curve.
Chicanes slow drivers down by as much as 29% by forcing them around multiple turns.
Next, curb extensions. These narrow the road at intersections.
Curb extensions slow down drivers, shorten crossing distances, and broaden visibility.
In New York City, bulb-outs reduced pedestrians killed or severely injured by 44%.
Finally, mid-block narrowing.
These are basically curb extensions between intersections that physically and visually constricts the roadway, slowing down cars & alerting drivers to the presence of a crosswalk.
These also could provide space for trees, bike parking, and more!
These are just a few ways we can slow down cars and make our streets safe for everyone using them.
When we put car space to better use, we have more room for trees, wider sidewalks, and bike parking.
