What breaks my heart the most—
beyond the horrific murders and
violence against Israeli Jews on October 7 and
the ensuing deaths of Palestinians in Gaza—
is the callous disregard and silence
for whether or not Jews live or die.
1/x
This from progressives
with whom I have stood
shoulder to shoulder
for decades.
2/x
I don’t expect that we will always agree on policy.
I do expect that
when Hamas murders 1400 Jews
you will raise your voices in
horror and
disgust and
moral outrage and
you will not remain silent.
3/x
For nearly 53 years,
I thought we were in this sacred work together,
building a world of
compassion and
justice,
dignity and
equity for all of us.
4/x
We stood together, I thought,
repairers of the preach,
in Ferguson and
George Floyd Square and
on the streets and
at the airport and
in the Halls of Congress
for immigrants and
Muslims and
Native Americans and
5/x
Marriage Equality and to
address systemic racism and
police brutality and
to fight climate change and
to protect women’s rights to abortion and
for health care and
for fair taxes and
to raise the minimum wage and
6/x
to stand up against white nationalism and
to create together a multiracial democracy.
7/x
But in our darkest hour of need—
on the single worst day of violence
against Jews in nearly 80 years—
you abandoned us.
8/x
I’m not asking you
to wave Israeli flags or—
God forbid—
support Bibi’s horrific leadership—
a demagogue I’ve protested for 28 years.
9/x
I’m asking for compassion
as we sit shivah and
gather the butchered and bloodies corpses
and bury our dead and
pray for the release of our captives.
10/x
I’m not asking you
to neglect the suffering
of those in Gaza.
God forbid!
I’m asking you to hold our pain, too.
11/x
I’m asking all of us
to stretch our hearts and
see Jews as human beings and
give a damn
whether we live or die.
