Judaism doesn't shy away from death; on the contrary--we run straight into the pain of grief and agony and loss: We sit with our loved ones and pray as they move from life to death. We wash their feet and their bodies when death comes.

We stay with them until they are buried, tenderly guarding their souls. We lower the casket into the ground ourselves. We cast earth onto the casket as we fill in the grave, one final act of love to return the body to the earth.
