In 2016 a 170 place child care centre was approved for this site. This began a 7 year fight by MTAG & health & air quality experts to highlight how inappropriate & dangerous it was.
It featured in academic papers &media articles for years 🧵
Air monitoring carried out by the QUT International Laboratory for Air Quality & Health found that air pollution here measured three times what the World Health Organisation considers to be safe research.qut.edu.au/ilaqh/projects…
In 2019 it was the subject of an academic paper titled 'Traffic pollution near childcare centres in Melbourne' that looked at the sitings of child care centres in Melbourne from an air quality perspective & recommended best practice mitigation strategies. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
MTAG held a protest on this corner and invited Associate Professor Lou Irving, head of respiratory medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital to speak. It was the first time he had been to this corner & he was shocked, but thankfully energised to help stop the proposal going ahead
So after 7 years it’s fantastic to see it being redeveloped as a petrol station. Very occasionally common sense does win!
Location? It’s the corner of Williamstown Rd and Francis St Yarraville where thousands of trucks pass every day. There could not be a worse place in Melbourne, if not Australia, for a child care centre.
