Current & former members of the @IHOPKC community are pushing back against leadership's decision to hire @StinsonLLP, a powerful Midwestern law firm, to investigate allegations of Clergy Sexual abuse against IHOPKC founder, Mike Bickle. julieroys.com/ihop-kc-indepe…
Members of the wider church accountability/survivor community have been trying to get the word out to the wider @IHOPKC community about WHY a third-party investigation by a law firm is a sign that IHOPKC is not acting in good faith.
And the extended @IHOPKC community is sharing these resources & educating themselves, which needs to happen as their leaders have made no effort to educate them & indeed benefit from their followers remaining trusting & as ignorant as possible.
We are starting to seeing this chart from @netgrace_org circulating & starting to see @IHOPKC people able to spot the red flags & to demand specific action.
Some @IHOPKC advocates have organized a petition for leaders to fire @StinsonLLP (which can't be bothered to even do basic PR to educate participants in investigations about why it is safe to investigate @MisconductAbuse by clergy.
I hope that you read & sign that petition for better investigative standards at @IHOPKC, even if you are not currently or formerly part of the movement.
Many survivors in other spaces are watching to see how people in their communities respond.
Many leaders in other communities are watching to see what their followers will let them get away with.
Especially if you are part of a charismatic movement, you need to be paying attention right now & making some noise.
Educate yourselves now before this happens in your own movement.
We've seen scandal after scandal followed by hasty restorations.
It is time for charismatics to demand greater transparency & accountability from their leaders, who frequently act as if their professions of Sincerity & Caring should be enough for people to trust them, even when the leaders have repeatedly failed to demonstrate good judgment.
I'm going to be doing a few threads about the @IHOPKC crisis in the coming days.
The goal is to offer educational resources to the community so they can make informed judgements & demand accountability from their leaders.
In the first thread, I'll be talking about what @IHOPKC has to lose by hiring @NetGrace_org, examining its earlier GRACE investigation & the mishandling of sexual assault that was occurring at at the same time.
In the next thread, I'll be talking about what @IHOPKC advocates will need to be asking for if, as it turns out, they cannot be *eh hem* "Saved by GRACE Alone" (meaning @netgrace_org , of course).
What happens if GRACE can't take the investigation or if IHOPKC can't hire them?
You need to be prepared for them, because if you Can't Be Saved By @netgrace_org alone, you will have to be *eh-hem* Saved by Work in making sure that the investigative firm (hopefully @GuidepostGlobal under supervision by a trusted advocate?) is properly structured.
@netgrace_org @GuidepostGlobal Stay tuned for more. If you are currently or formerly part of the @IHOPKC or the charismatic movement, please feel free to mix up these threads & share them in whatever social media will reach your people.
If you are a survivor of abuse in @IHOPKC or other communities & are thinking of talking to a journalist, please make sure that you ask them if they have training in trauma-informed journalism.
Make sure you are protecting yourself & others whose story intersects with your own.
Here are some resources recommended by a trauma-informed journalist whom I trust to work with survivors of abuse.
Ask journalists if they have been trained by The Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma (@DartCenter ).
Here are some specific resources from @DartCenter that can help you gauge whether a journalist is safe:
Well, y'all- @IHOPKC is now not using regional law firm @StinsonLLP to conduct an investigation into Clergy Sexual Abuse allegations against @MikeBickle8 .
Instead, they are using a "local law firm," which they somehow forgot to name.
@ihopkc Well, where do we start? We are left, once again, with an unnamed law firm. Once again, we know nothing of their qualifications, of their methods, track record, scope of investigation, competence in Clergy Sexual Abuse cases, forensic interviewing credentials, etc.
I am in a Plato reading group led by the @CatherineProj & we just finished The Sophist, which is about how to recognize teachers who present themselves as possessing the truth but who are actually image-makers who create false pictures of reality with words, but seem real.
I'm in this group because I need to understand Plato to understand Philo to understand what Paul is responding to in Romans, but the entire time, I have been thinking about the work of @WadeMullen & @chuckdegroat on image-management & narcissism in the church.
@wademullen @chuckdegroat The Sophists of Soctrates' time (at least according to Plato's image of them) are of people who impress & deceive with words. A lot of the language & imagery we get from why idolatry is wrong comes from Philo's reading of these dialogues in conversation with Torah.
.@IHOPKC people- The bonus episode of @HeavenBentPod season 4 mentions that people are publicly naming victims without their consent.
Please do not ever do this.
If you see someone do this, tell them to take it down immediately.
Whether someone is or isn't a survivor of abuse is their story to tell on their terms.
If their story intersects with another survivor or is witnessed by a third party, it's more complicated, but for the love of God, protect their confidentiality.
There's a lot of garbage talk about "not gossiping" that is basically to discourage people from talking about the allegations & demanding that the leaders conduct themselves transparently so that an adequate investigation can occur.
This is the adult son of @AllenSHood, who was a senior @IHOPKC leader for over 20 years & who released a statement in support of survivors who alleged sexual abuse by Mike Bickle.
Well done, Samuel.
People who are in @IHOPKC currently or who already left are reeling, as are charismatics who were never entrenched in the IHOPKC community, but who were taught to revere Bickle as a prophet of great integrity & who may have gone to conferences or consumed IHOPKC materials.
@ihopkc The former leaders who are standing with survivors are important voices for breaking the image control & manipulation we are seeing from Buckle & his enablers.
.@Rns @bobsmietana @reachjulieroys @CTmagazine @charismamag @kathrynmaepost , has anyone looked into this 2018 @netgrace_org investigation of an @ihopkc staff member for sexual abuse?
The @IHOPKC staff member who was investigated was listed on an SBC list of alleged abusers & was accused of molesting a 14 yo girl when he was a youth pastor at a Baptist church in the 1980s.
@ihopkc According to the @KansasCityStar article, the man accused of molesting a 14 year old while he was a youth pastor, Brad Tebbutt, is still on staff. @IhopKC would not provide further comment but claimed that Tebutt had committed no "further wrongdoing."
