I was working @nytimes on The Daily in May 2021 when Israel began another deadly bombing of Gaza
While recording the show, I pushed back, called out the wishy washy pro-Israeli slant. In response, an editor outright said “you shouldn’t work on this bc you’re Palestinian” 🧵
This was one of the most racist interactions of my career.
I went to HR. Was told by higher ups that this editor “didn’t mean it that way”
What way did she mean it?
There is no way to tie someone’s identity to blatant exclusion and not have it be wildly racist. 2/
Nothing ended up happening to that editor because of course nothing happened to that editor. The Times, as an institution, sees nothing wrong with what she did or the way they approach coverage. 3/
For a month, myself & other colleagues tried to have good faith convos & push the coverage to be less biased but having those convos felt a lot like hitting my head against a brick wall over & over again. Ingrained Zionism was so strong that critical thinking could not exist. 4/
Finally, I internally released a memo to the International desk, The Daily, & the Arab ERG about some of the many ways we failed as a news org and failed our listeners. When I read back the memo yesterday, it is so sanitized. I can hear the fear of retaliation in my writing. 5/
Two and a half years ago, I wrote: “In this postmortem, I want to highlight specific concerns and critics and then outline some high level changes to ensure we are better prepared for the next time Palestine and Israel are in the news.”
Very clearly nothing has changed.
6/
News is supposed to question what power tells us and dig til we find the truth. It is not accepting IDF propaganda at face value and punishing journalists who dare to speak up.
7/
@jazzedloon @jamiekeiles &Anne Boyer are upholding the sacred job of a journalist by questioning, digging, refusing to cower to powerful, repressive institutions whether it be the IDF or @nytimes.
They are standing alongside Shireen, Bisan, Motaz, Plestia, & 5 million others.

Last week was the end of my time @NPR. It was also the end of my time in journalism.
I have spent close to a decade making audio & fighting for the rights of my colleagues as an organizer @GimletUnion, contract action mem @NYTimesGuild & steward @WeMakeNPR.
I have been burning w/ a white hot rage my entire career bc of how companies mismanage, grind down, &, ultimately, burn out workers. Bc of the lack of care & respect management show towards the people making critical work.
That rage became corrosive as journo mgmt continued being out of touch w/ workers, unresponsive to deep concerns &, frankly, unimaginative when it comes to solutions. A leadership class that lays off workers while demanding ever more output & “trying to solve burn out” is a joke
