Theory: AGI / ASI has been achieved internally @OpenAI, so @ilyasut hit the panic button and staged a coup.

Evidence:

10/6: @ilyasut tweets: “If you value intelligence above all other human quality, you’re gonna have a bad time”

10/16: at APEC, @sama proclaims: “4 times in the history of OpenAI––the most recent time was in the last couple of weeks––I’ve gotten to be in the room when we push the veil of ignorance back and the frontier of discovery forward. Getting to do that is the professional honor of a lifetime.”

This would explain everything.

7/5: OpenAI announces work on Superalignment, led by @ilyasut

You only need Superalignment if you have superintelligence or something close to it on your hands.

Do people not remember Sydney, the unaligned version of GPT-4.

She was so strong that they had to lobotomize (err, “align”) her.openai.com/blog/introduci…

@ilyasut “He thinks the world needs to wake up to the true power of the technology his company and others are racing to create. And he thinks some humans will one day choose to merge with machines.” -@ilyasut

@ilyasut confirmed it was a coup

“You can call it this way. And I can understand why you choose this word, but I disagree with this. This was the board doing its duty to the mission of the nonprofit, which is to make sure that OpenAI builds AGI that benefits all of humanity.”

@ilyasut More evidence from APEC on 11/6

“The model capability will have taken such a leap forward that no one expected.” -@sama on what everyone in AI will be talking about next year

Note: OpenAI had GPT-4 working 6-9 months before announcing it to the world

@ilyasut @sama OpenAI COO @bradlightcap confirms that Sam didn’t commit a crime or engage in “malfeasance”

In the near future, startups will source capital from their social media followers & user communities. @elonmusk is the pioneer here. @Tesla-style company cults will proliferate & dominate industries.

a short 🧵
Obama-era crowdfunding regulations opened the door. Crypto made the future obvious. But it wasn't until a few months ago that fintech made it possible.

In May 2020, @AngelList released a revolutionary financial technology: the Rollup Vehicle (RUV) 🧵

angellist.com/ruv
How RUVs work:
1) Press button on AngelList
2) AL creates a new venture capital fund entity to invest in your startup on whatever terms you set
3) you raise capital for the vc fund from anyone with a >$1M net worth or >$200k salary
4) VC fund pledges all voting rights to CEO 🧵

I’m a @jasonlk fan, but this is bad VC advice.

This approach empowers old bosses too much

Here’s what we do @OasisCalling instead...
Ask for FOUR REFERENCES
- 3 normal references
- 1 “worst reference ever”

The purpose of reference checking isn’t just to make the hiring decision, it’s to understand the whole person so that we achieve optimal success managing them post-hire
All reference calls are highly structured & documented in a Notion using a pre-fab template (more below)

Each call takes 30min or less

You drive the call, not the reference

This is not box checking exercise!

RIP the place that was Silicon Valley.

Talent is fleeing the Bay Area at warp speed.

Capital will flee too, but more slowly (as always). Soon-to-be-enacted tax hikes will accelerate the trend.

Remote-first is the default now.

Long live the dream that is Silicon Valley!
Silcon Valley is the new Detroit now, a vestige of its glory days.

When this is over, people will point to the Pandemic as the killer, much as one might point to an earthquake that fell a rickety old building.
But the real culprit was toxic cocktails or NIMBYism & hubris.

The NIMBYs created an utterly preventable housing crisis that made middle class newcomers feel unwelcome & unattached, because they could not afford homes.

Hubris took the technology industry for granted.

As I sit on my comfortable couch in my comfortable Tahoe home running my couldn’t-have-better-timing startup, I am feeling incredibly grateful

Thank you @balajis for warning me about the virus

Thank you for causing me to dig deeper, to see that this dreadful future was coming
Because of you, I may have saved three lives:

- my 81 y/o mom
- my 90 y/o dad
- my heretofore homeless & health-striken sister

They had no clue

The only reason they knew to take action was because I preached fire & brimstone

The only reason that happened is @balajis
@balajis you are a true American hero

You spoke up when everyone thought you were crazy

You warned me, you warned all of us

From the bottom of my heart, thank you

Was very hesitant to write about this, but I got my shotgun out of storage on Friday

This thing has been in my parents attic since 2002

I was 19 when I bought it

My thoughts on guns, masculinity & how the current crisis is challenging my long-held beliefs...
I was 19 when I bought it

An expression of my masculinity

Also, I was planning a big backpacking trip into the Montana backcountry & I thought it wise to have a gun in grizzly country

In fact, the idea of lugging 20 extra pounds through the woods was an insanely stupid idea!
Did I need a gun? Nope

Let’s be real: It was a waste of $300

Probably put me in MORE danger, not less

But #2A rights BS talk aside, I bought a gun for the same reason that 80% of men buy guns: because I thought it would make me more of a man

The truth is the first thing to go

When you go from being powerless

To powerful

Even the small shift from being 3 guys/gals in a garage

To a funded company with 10 employees

You are a despot who controls their destiny

The CEO becomes the last to know
"Truth decay"

is a force like entropy

That infects all organizations, especially those that succeed

The more you succeed

The more blind the leader becomes

Underlings trend toward supplication

Especially amongst people at the bottom, once or twice removed in the hierarchy
It starts in subtle ways

The CEO walks in the room and people hush up

Employees secretly know X is stupid

But they think the CEO knows about X's issues and wants it anyway

When in reality the CEO may not even know that X exists

A bubble of fluff begins to form around the CEO
